There's another thread on this in the NYC forum, but it does not include a poll.

Generally speaking, "uptown" to me is Manhattan north of 59th Street. However, I work below Canal Street and when I'm heading north, I will sometimes say "I'm going uptown" even to refer to going to midtown.

The Bronx uptown?.... since when?

Next thing you'll hear is that some people call their Harlem neighborhood 'Manhattan Valley'

The uptown & downtown designations apply only to Manhattan. (Downtown Brooklyn would be the only exception)

I accidentally voted for choice 2, but meant choice 3. I always considered the Bronx Uptown as well. I know tons of people feel the same way. Idk know if it's because it naturally flows out from Upper Manhattan or has something to do with the subway, but geographically it is uptown.

Uptown = UES +UWS. Tha border line between uptown and midtown is 59th street.

Which street divides midtown and downtown?

If the Bronx is uptown does that make Staten Island, downtown?

Staten Island doesn't flow out of Manhattan the way the Bronx does. Continuation of the grid and short bridges over the Harlem River. Nor are the demographics, build, architecture the same in regards to SI v Downtown. It's hard to describe. Upper Manhattan and the Bronx are the most closely related areas of the city on two separate boroughs.

As someone who has lived/grew up in Manhattan and the Bronx, I have always considered the Bronx+Upper Manhattan, Uptown.

How are you defining Upper Manhattan?
