Is it stupid for a young white dude to move to Bed Stuy with his Latino Girlfriend? (Kingston: apartment, neighborhoods)

I have a chance to get this apartment in Stuyvesant Heights near Macon and Lewis off the Kingston Throop stop.

I'm a young, white, city savvy dude. I lived in LA for several years and neighborhoods of all types. I don't know NYC very well, though, having not been here long.

I'm not really afraid to go anywhere, but I want to be comfortable, and I have a lot of respect for people, neighborhoods, and traditions. Input?

Are you already in NY? If so, have you been to the area both during the day and at night? I've certainly been to Bed-Stuy and see plenty of your ilk there, but I don't know the area well enough to know the streets so can't advise you on that specific area.

Try searching Flickr: We're having a massage for photos - just type Bed-Stuy in the search box - that should give you some ideas of what it looks like if you haven't been there.

I have tons of family in Bed Stuy. You will be fine.

I just read where you said you will be. My cousins own a brownstone by where you will be. You have nothing to worry about.

check the original post. The word 'safe' was not used. However, 'comfortable' *was* used and I think his post is totally appropriate.

Probably not. Then again it probably isn't safe for that black guy with the latina girl friend to move to Bed Stuy either.

Once the black ladies of Bed Stuy see him with his latina girlfriend its probably curtains for the guy

I don't know what you're quibbling about. Why don't you read the whole entire original post out loud to yourself, including the title, and listen. You will not hear yourself say 'safe' out loud. However, you will hear yourself say 'comfortable'. Maybe this method will help you.
