Household question
Maybe Mead knows what to do as he has given me advice before(or someone else).
Awhile ago I bought a Bissell carpet.floor dual brush sweeper(not electric) because i have a small apartment and also for nostalgic reasons (when i was growing up we had a bissell sweeper) and i saw this as an updated version of that old dinosaur so i bought it. I didn't actually use it yet(I have an electric sweeper too) but when I picked it up i noticed a some roaches along the bottom of it so I am guessing there are some roaches living inside of it (probably attracted to the brushes and inside apparatus)
before you all say "how can you live like that!"! i have the roach problem under control in the apt with the 365 day traps which are very powerful indeed and my own gel and spray treatments work better than the monthly exterminations the landlord gives us. it's just that they have found this sweeper to their liking. they don't come out unless you move the unit so it just sits there
how would i rid the sweeper of these roaches? should i put some of the year long traps under the sweeper for a few days or spray into it? I want to take it to the fire escape and shake it out but if i do that they will scatter in the transit from the floor to the window.
how should i approach this?
sorry to offend, i know i should just have left this in the closet(where they don't go) until i was ready to use it

Wow thats a really random problem.
Personally I hate bugs and would be eager to kill them as soon as possible. So I would probably just open the whole thing up with one hand and hold a can of raid in the other and start spraying when the roaches scatter.
Other than that you could possibly try spraying Raid around the bissell, or into it. Alternatively you could place traps around the sweeper and just wait for them to come out.
You might want to try to temporarily get some glue traps, which are made primarily for Mice, but also work well with larger insects, like roaches. These work by basically trapping the insects on the glue trap and they just end up dying there. I previously lived in a place with a lot of bugs, and those things worked wonders on fixing the problem.
Also remember if you start spraying Raid to have some good ventillation. That stuff seems to be pretty bad for your health and personally its given me headaches in the past. So just be sure to crack open your windows.

I know, those sprays give me headaches and SOB. I will stick with the traps and may be spray before leaving the apt. It's eerie because unless you move the unit you don't see them at all.
Thanks again!

I'd take the sweeper and some spray outside or up to the roof and spray, spray, spray.
Shake the dang thing, run it over a surface to rotate the rollers, and spray some more.
Repeat.
Buena fortuna.

I'd take it to the fire escape via open window in a heartbeat but if I do that they will scatter in the few seconds in transit. maybe a big trash bag underneath it might work

throw it out and buy a new one. Then do one of the aerosole bombs (like 4 of the canisters), then follow it up with the gels, and other roach baits...and you should be alright.
