Do not hint at this being a generalization. Compared to other cities...New Yorkers are extra competitive, edgy and stressed/worked out. Everything from the clash of cultures, high COL, fast pace of life, expectations and pressure can cause even the best of us to go crazy.
Why do you believe New Yorkers over think and analyze things? Is it the fear of losing something, believing everybody is a potential backstabber or just worrying about maintaining their sense of purpose? Sure thinking and analyzing is a great quality to have but overdoing it causes paranoia, anxiety and hostility.
It is not a New York thing. Its a city thing. I'm from Ohio and I feel that way. Its also a Northern thing. I find Midwesterners, while it isn't completely missing, are a bit more laid back because the cities aren't as fast or hectic as the Northeastern ones.
It also depends on where you're at. Here in Virginia my paranoia and anxiety is reduced a lot. At least this part of Virgina. Northern Virginia could be a return to old times, but I haven't lived there to find out.
Your title seems like a mismatch for your post. There isn't necessarily a connection between stressing or analyzing and paranoia.
I do NOT believe that New Yorkers over-think and over-analyze. I think the problem is that people in general, especially elsewhere, don't analyze enough. That's why you get people saying they didn't actually read their mortgage contract. Probably New Yorkers learn early on that it's to their benefit to examine situations carefully, starting with when they arrive and are hunting for an apartment.
Perhaps you're confusing paranoia with caution, with shrewdness, with careful judgment?

IF you are from NYC, I mean bred here, then you would understand. A New Yorker from one of the more notorious 'hoods knows you have to be careful. I for one have seen humans do some of the most savage things to each other. People who grew up with each other, and knew each other from 1st grade have murdered each other, seemingly over stupid stuff. I have trust issues myself. Very rarely do I let people in to get to know me very well. I always expect the worst of people. But then again i have seen the worst in people.
It is the rest of the country that exists in more of a paranoid state. It has always been the small town that were wary of strangers and their "book larnin' ways." The bible belt and its bronze age thinking is what exemplifies paranoia.
After all, the entire South is still fighting the Civil War trying to get their slaves back.
New York is open to change and paranoia comes from an unrealistic fear of change.
Look at gays fled the small towns of because of the rampant homophobia, aka FEAR of America's sons turning into "sissies." Look at the parts of the country that sought communists under their beds.
As far as the stress involved in "making it," that all goes away once you realize you WON'T.
The word you're looking for is neurotic not paranoid. I don't think one can generalize paranoia. At least not in the US.
There are a lot of neurotic types in NYC.
