I can't argue with you there. I should also add, it does suck that this guy is being like this with you. Only real advice I can give is learn your rights inside and out and assert them.

I was kicked out of renting in a co-op building because the management was selling all the units and kicking out the renters. On the day i was moving out the movers didn't get a chance to clear out the small stuff from my storage closets (they were tired) so I decided to do it a few days later.

This super (he had a vague dislike toward me for some reason and i used to tip him) when i told him I'd be back in a few days to remove the rest of my stuff, had the nerve to say to me "you have to move all your stuff out of there, get it out or it's going to be removed".

No legal notice was actually served on me to vacate, all I had received was a letter from the landlord instructing me to vacate by a certain date(5/31) which I did on 6/6

There was no way i was going to listen to him when I had already moved 98% of my stuff out with no legal notice

A few days later i had removed the rest of the stuff, swept the place, turned in the key and went about my business living in a place where i cannot be kicked out. and the new super does not talk to me that way either

I would like to know what to tip a super for an isolated service..something broke in my shower..I am new in the building and he charged me for several things..the last time he came up and did something(which should have been done before I moved in) I gave him 5 dollars because it really wasn't his job..I don't want to set a precedent. He is nice enough to come in when I am at work..I trust him..I only want to give him 3 dollars. Is that enough..I said I would take care of him.Is it necessary to give more because he is making it convenient to come when I am at work? Thank you..tortured

I am not sure what you should tip (perhaps someone can write about that as well as how much to tip the super during the holiday season). But you mention the super comes when you are at work. Supers usually work during the daytime on weekdays when most people are at work. So I don't think he is making it convenient for you that he comes when you are at work (unless you don't work conventional working hours.)

If something broke in your shower I think that the LEAST you should pay is $5. It took him how long to fix it? About 30 minutes, including finding the parts? That's JUST above minimum wage on an hourly basis.

It's not the super's job to make his repair visits convenient for the tenant. He has work hours and the tenant has work hours. They may or may not coincide. And if he comes OUTSIDE of his work hours for a routine (non-emergent) repair, $5 is really stingy.

The super is being paid by the people who own or manage your building. Feel free to not tip.

wow. I had no idea you were supposed to tip a super. No biggie as I have never used him for anything, but it seems wacko to me that if something in my apartment breaks I have to tip. Isn't that supposed to be included in my rent...the functionality of appliances, running water, functioning toilet, etc?

If you want good service, you tip and you tip well. If after tipping well, the service is lousy, then you may want to stop greasing the super's palm. In some buildings, the tipping is practically extortion. You tip so that the super (or his kids) don't damage your property behind your back.

My landlord told us not to tip, (I think he takes care of it or something)

Does anyone else have this experience?

My super is great by the way, friendly, and everything works after he comes
