Your absolute best bet is to find a place for rent by owner in a walk up rather than a big building with a mgmt company. Be prepared to pay extra (pet deposit or pet rent). These people are saying far upper Manhattan, you will find a place there but don't believe these people when they talk about how lovely it is up there. It is still largely poor Dominicans and its very loud, Im actually in the area as we speak by Presbyterian Hospital. If you're coming from Chicago the best comparison is if Uptown and Rogers a Park were put together, but more Dominican. If you must be up in this area, the more north and west you are the better. You definitely need to be above 168th, but you're gonna wanna be north of 181st and west of Broadway if you have any choice. The best area is the enclave called "Hudson Heights which is in the far NW reaches of Washington Heights with the GW bridge to the south, Bennett Avenue to the east, Fort Tryon park to the north and the Hudson to the west. The A train has two stops here, 181st, and 190th. It's a nice area isolated from the rest of the area and unlike the rest of the Heights/Inwood, it's not Dominican. It's largely Gernan Jewish descended people and a throwback to the time when the whole Washington Heights was Jews (and Inwood was roughneck Irish). In Hudson Heights you might be able to find an L shaped studio (Junior 1 bedroom) in one of the walkups there if there is any inventory for rent because it's mostly co-op buldings and the rentals that do pop up are usually rented via word of mouth within the area or to Yeshiva U students (that's how the area stayed Jewish), and you will definitely be able to find something under 2 grand in Washington Heights.


Also if you don't want to be Uptown, you will most likely find a studio under $2k in a walkup in Yorkville (easternmost part of the UES, less ritzy and mostly low rise and a hike from public transit) or the part of the LES between to the BK and the Manhattan Bridge which is the least gentrified but honestly its kind of icky there and I would only live there if I couldn't find anything in Hudson Heights or Inwood and had a choice between there and the crappy eastern parts of Washington Heights.

Yikes. We will be in the same boat when we move to nyc in about 6 months. We have a golden retreiver who is about 50 lbs and like you there is no parting with the dog. We however have decided on brooklyn for various reasons and it seems some neighborhoods are more dog friendly. I totally was going to sneak him in if need be but our last apartment literally had the vet weigh him and sign a sheet saying he weighed that. So depending on how strict they are that may or may not work.

Not exactly true and not incorrect either there's 4 big management companies that i know of that will take a 50lb dog BUT only with extra security. While there's a landlord i know in the uws who only owns 3 brownstones and he refuses any dogs pass 10lbs. Pics, vet verification and meeting dog is needed. Lots of variables to consider and sometimes like this working with an experience broker is helpful.
