What neighborhood is the 67th?
I was surprised that Bed-stuy had the highest crime rate for Brooklyn due to the fact that it's gentrifying. I would of tought Brownsville, with all those projects would come out ahead.
And is the 75th East NY?

The 67 is listed on the map as East Flatbush. It is bounded by East 98 St on the east, Flatbush Ave on the west down to the Junction. It has a large West Indian/Jamaican population. Yes, the 75 is East NY & Highland Park, from Van Sinderen Ave on the west to Elderts Lane on the east.

only certain parts of bed-stuy are gentrifying...there are some parts of bed-stuy that still look like the '80s no lie. fulton street from utica avenue to rockaway avenue for example.

I saw this article and was surprised by a few areas as well. Far Rockaway doesnt look as bad in this article as it 'seems' when driving through the area.
The bronx looks pretty bad, even after all years of 'up and coming' changes. Seeing it on a map does not make the area very appealing to me.

far rockaway is relatively safe except for the projects. those housing developments raise the crime rate up.

Anybody else surprised at Washington Heights minisclue crime rate?
That and Midtown south were shocking too me.
But you can see where NYC comes out being the safest city. Most of Queens, Brooklyn south, Staten Island, sections of downtown/uptown and parts of the Bronx trump the above average (1000+) crime areas.

I agree with this. Projects are where the majority of crime occurs in a neighborhood. That's why Soundview IMO is undeserving of it's bad rep. Besides the point that it's crime rate isnt high, you can assume the crime it has occurs in the projects. So walking around that neighborhood isn't as bad as walking through University Heights which despite having no projects, it has a higher crime rate and all this is coming from the tenement blocks. To me the two most similar places (besides the projects) in the city are Fordham-Bedford and Soundview. These seems to be where everyone goes to for drugs.
Also it is my belief that if Uni Heights, Fordham, E. Tremont had any housing projects they would be shaded draker. That is the difference IMO in the lighter shade. Although if E. Tremont had projects, it would be shaded completely dark.

The Midtown South Pct has always been a leader in reported crime for several reasons.
- The area of Times Square has always been a draw for tourists. Tourists are a draw for criminals. Three card montes, pickpockets and bag snatches contribute alot to the numbers.
- The number of commercial burglaries pump up the crime figures significantly. Anytime an office is broken into or a supply closet it gets classified as a burglary.
- Penn Station & The Port Authority Bus Terminal generate alot of crime. Bag & property theft & pickpockets again. The amount of people that commute in & out of the city daily is tremendous and most of them come through 34 St & 42 St. Remember where there are large crowds there will always be crooks looking to take advantage.
The amount of violent crime has decreased dramatically over the years in MTS Pct with the turnover of the SRO hotels like the Martinique & the Holland Hotel. Not to mention all of the change of Times Square. But because of the daily transient population, it will always be a leader in crime numbers.
