yeah mott avenue's no worse than downtown bklyn, or jamaica avenue. at least in the daytime. but like i said, the crime rate would be much safer if we had no projects. anything bad that happens on mott avenue is mostly to blame because redfern is a few blocks away. the mcdonalds on mott avenue got shot up in 1999 and 2 people were hit. me and my friend saw it but that spring in 1999, rockaway was in the midst of a little crime wave. things happen but very isolated incidents. and 1999 was the last time i saw anything remotely close to that happen on mott.

This was a great post. Do you have access to what this map looked like 15/20/0r 25+ years ago so we can see the changes.
The Bronx has NO black areas, unlike Brooklyn and Manhattan, however the southern Bronx has a good chunk of darker blue which is no surprise, as does much of Central Brooklyn...again..no surprises there.
But lets look at the numbers and its pretty scary:
The highest crime numbers were:
East New York in Brooklyn had a whopping 31 murders, 40 rapes, 813 robberies, 657 assaults
vs Morris Heights in the Bronx with 19 murders, 37 rapes, 452 robberies, 510 assaults.
If you look at the sheer VOLUME of crimes occuring in Brooklyn the crime there is far higher than ANYWHERE in the Bronx. Brooklyn, by far, has the real crime problems in the city. The hard core South Bronx? 14 murders, 24 rapes, 438 robberies, 425 assaults...which is drastically lower than East New York and Brownsville, and lower than Bed-Stuy.
After all the hype about Brooklyn..large swaths are far deadlier and more dangerous than ANYWHERE in the Bronx...and yet the Bronx has not "enjoyed" the benefits of gentrification...imagine if it did? The Bronx's improvement cannot be seen on this map..however I suspect there were large swaths that WERE black and are now lighter, and there is not even one black swath....I am pleased...and we are on track to continue improving.

Keep in mind that many of those Brooklyn neighborhoods have a higher population than the Bronx neighborhoods. That's why despite having 24 more murders, 14 more rapes, TWICE as many robberies, TWICE as many assaults, and 141 more burglaries, East NY has the SAME crime rate as Fordham. They both are the same shade and fall in with 1200-1400 crimes per 100,000. This means that East NY is no more dangerous than Fordham.
NYC had about 500 murders last year. That's the most any city had in 2007. Yet because of the population is murder rate was about 6 per 100,000. This was by far one of the lowest numbers for any city. Raw numbers can be decieving.
From the map, I see no real difference between Brooklyn north and the South Bronx. Brooklyn has a dark area, but then everything else is a shade of dark green....just like the Bronx. As a matter of fact the Bronx has a higher percentage of the borough with above average crime (1000+) than does Brooklyn. Many of the Brooklyn south neighborhoods are really safe.
Also, if you were to get Mott Haven's rate of crime by itself, it would be among the worst in the city.

Yes clearly the Population is a fact..nonetheless..the supposed "gentrification" that has engulfed Brooklyn seems not to have had the effect that many think. Gentrification has yet to make a real mark in the Bronx..yet the crime rate is not far off from Brooklyn..interesting. Looking at Mott Haven's crime rate by itself..it would be among the highest in the city..but nonetheless lower than quite a few other neighborhoods....seems that other neighborhoods outiside the borough are more deserving of the South Bronx's reputation these days.
That said...I would like to see the old maps of crime to see the changes...I think that is where the real story is....this is nice and all..but the changing or NOT changing crime would be far more interesting, revealing, and would speak volumes about the city and where is may be headed.

500 murders in city with a population of 8,000,000 + is pretty freaking low.
On another note, I read an article recently, I think it was in New York magazine, where some NYPD guy, someone affiliated with the department somehow was basically saying most of the violent crime in NYC these days is overwhelmingly amongst people who know each other somehow with a large chunk of it being criminal against criminal. I should have posted the article. It was actually a whole series that took a closer look at crime in the city.

i agree, it seems like most crimes are committed against people who know each other. its not like back in the day when crimes were more random.

strangers get robbed all the time. it's not like the thug is posted up a block from the train waiting for someone he knows so he can rob him/her. I think the very violent crime like murders and stabbing etc, come from disputes and drug incidents while robbery seems to be equal opportunity
