Default 2007 NYC crime map

The letters are pretty small but the premise is simple. The darker area had higher crime rates. This is for 2007.

This is Uptown and the Bronx. I will post Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island in following post.

I will also post a link to the actual PDF article if you guys want to view the exact numbers.

http://media.nymag.com/docs/08/01/080114crimemaps.pdf

Wow, where can I start. I noticed (as I suspected) that the central and south Bronx were the worst areas. Following are the West Bronx, South Central Bronx, and North central. The better areas were in the far north west and in the extreme east. The 44th, 46th and 52nd were all pretty similar. Also Soundview is overhyped. It's not as dangerous as people make it out to seem. Certainly not the worst in the Bronx. What else to say? The Bronx has alot of high crime neighborhoods thatd for sure.

As far as Manhattan goes. I was shocked, absolutely shocked at Washington Heights low crime rate. It's on par with the Upper West Side for God's sake. Inwood is higher in crime than the Heights but these neighborhoods aren't as bad as across the river in ther Bronx. The northern part of West Harlem expirenced high crime more so than the gentrified Morningside Heights. Central Harlem, no surprise there had a high crime rate. But check out East Harlem, Woah! I knew it was bad but it was off the charts. It's completely shaded black.

The upper west side was good.......the upper east side was more crime filled.

Next up:

Downtown

WTH?

This came out clear.....I dont know why the other one came out so small.

Wow, look at Midtown. It had a very high crime rate. Look at Midtown south it's shaded black. Midtown east was decent as compared to Midtown north/south.

Guy was right with Chelsea/Gramarcy they expirience alot of crime....comparable to Bronx nabes.

Greenwich Village/East Village were good areas.

Downtown had me fooled. Look at the Lower East Side shaded all black. Probably due to the amount of projects. Tribeca had high crime and Chinatown was ehh.

Up Next: Queens, Brooklyn, and Staen Island.

As an overall , Queens decent. Look at southside Jamaica .... that was a real trouble spot. Far Rockaway had an above average crime rate. Forest Hills and Bayside were the safest neighborhoods in Queens.

Brooklyn is another story. Bed Stuy was the worst in BK. Then like the Bronx the sorrounding areas of Bushwick, Brownsville, East NY were all affected by crime. Then you have a few other relative crime filled areas. But southern Brooklyn was nice. No place stands out as a no-go.

Staten Island was relatively crime filled. But no extreme danger zones.

I'll try to post the color legend, so you see the crime rates.

14 murders in mott haven alone? man! but the robberies - university heights, tremont, bedford park had 500+ robberies. that's a bit excessive. eastchester had a lot of murders what 17? I wish the info were in a spread sheet or something so i could play with the numbers a bit more.

Brownsville had 28 murders and 500+ robberies. BX has three NHs with 500+ robberies. these numbers really put things into perspective and why the bronx has such a bad rep

Yeah and the thing with the Bronx is that there is really no let up. There's very few neighborhood that you could say, "Ok this will bring the numbers down". Alot of high crime areas.

Mott Haven doesn't surprise me with 14 murders.

I am surprised that the Bronx doesn't have one neighborhood shaded completley black.

I worked in the 73 Pct/Brownsville in the mid 90's and we were always busy. It is such a small precinct but it is never ending with calls. People always try to compare it to the 75 pct except that the 75 is four times the size of the 73 and simialr in crime stats. I was surprised that the 67 Pct didn't have more crime.... that place is one of the worst in the city, in my opinion. Most of the people who live there have little regard for human life & the law.
