Landlord/tenant court in NYC is not a slow as everyone assumes...especially for none payment of rent and lease violations. Queens and Brooklyn counties are actually extremely quick.
Right. Be sure to bring lots of money to fund your case.
Any funds I pay are included in the judgment against the tenant. 99% of the time I get theses funds back...with interest..through wage garnishment, bank levies, liens or tax return seizures.
There are cases where the tenants are practically criminals and yet the cases drag on still. It is usually the worst tenants. Why ? who knows. They have little to lose and just keep going is my guess. Every "new order to show cause" must be heard and this goes for both sides no matter how specious the claims.
Anyone who would pursue a case after a tenant used security deposit for final month's rent - which I have never seen as a single complaint - has a lot of time or money on his or her hands ... likely both. Most people have better things to do. You pick your battles.
Most landlords actually agree to this. I could only see something different if there is a history of damage.

I simply do not believe you and suspect one of the anti-tenant trolls.
OP if you take this advice to squat and refuse to leave, know that after you go through L and T court you will not be known as a model tenant anymore. Any potential landlord who does his due diligence will peg you as a free loader and not rent to you.
In other words...you'll get blacklisted! Only the uninformed desperate slumlords who have a hard time filling their vacancies will rent to you.

As we speak, moves are being made against the so-called blacklist.
This could be a factor for people and I would therefore not want to make little of it. Still ... We will see what happens. There have been lawsuits and these were won.
