Its not Italian nor Irish. To some extent black, but the black population is on the decline. Latino? It could be more Latino these days, most notably in Queens and The Bronx. Italians, Irish, AA and Puerto Ricians are old school New Yorkers, these groups are in significant decline.

Certainly not very Irish anymore. They were about a third of the population in 1890 but fell to about 10 percent by 1960 and are about 5% of the population today.

Italians have gone from about 17 percent in 1960 to 8 percent today.

The Jewish population dropped from about 2 million or a quarter of the population in the 1950s to about 1 million today. It's also a lot more Orthodox/Hasidic than it used to be.

And the Black population has shifted from African American to Caribbean and the Hispanic population has shifted from being dominated by Puerto Ricans to an array of Hispanic groups.

This. I would say the new school New Yorkers ethnic-wise are South Asians, Middle Easterners/West Asians, Continental Africans, Eastern Europeans, West Indians/Caribbeans, Central Americans, and some South Americans.

Specifically, New York seems to be getting more and more Guyanese, Egyptian, Serbian, Polish, Bangladeshi/Bengali, Chinese, Colombian, Haitian, St. Lucian, Jamaican, Ghanian, Ecuadorian, Korean, Mexican, Sri Lankan, Yemeni, Syrian, Pakistani, Moroccan, Palestinian, Trinidadian, Albanian, Lebanese, Indian, Dominican, Nigerian, Sierra Leonean, Salvadorian, Honduran, Peruvian, and Lebanese these days than the original old school NYC ethnic troupe of Irish, Italian, African American, Puerto Rican, Russian, German, and Greek.

It's full of young white transplants from other parts of the USA living out the NYC lifestyle they seen on tv while growing up. You can I.D. them from a mile away.. Generally look like the cast of Sex And the City or Friends, and don't look like they fit in completely to NYC culture, are generally ignorant to the generations of local New Yorkers, and have never been outside Manhattan or Brooklyn in their 5 years there.
Only time they've been to Queens or NJ is when they go take a plane back to Ohio to see their parents for Thanksgiving.

This is generally true especially in inner city neighborhoods that hug around Manhattan. Inner city neighborhoods used to be mainly ethnic white, Latino or AA has now become mostly middle American white with elements of expat Euro Trash. Nothing wrong with it, but its just the signs of the times. If anyone still wants to experience old school New Yorkers, they might have to take a Greyhound bus to Allentown PA, or a plane ride to NC or Florida.
