You could always consider roommates. Splitting a 2-3 bedroom with a person per bedroom, can drive down the cost-per-person reasonably well.
I would reconsider the "must live in manhattan" mentality though. Where exactly in manhattan do you want/need to generally go? Depending on that, living in LIC (queens) or certain parts of Brooklyn, may be significantly more convenient than living in many neighborhoods of manhattan.
For example, I work at 23rd and 6th ave, and my commute from lic (20-25min) is faster than some co-workers on the ues.
120k is a great salary for someone who is single, but you will still have to make tradeoffs. I'm married and have lived in nyc on a combined income of 90k up to 270k. At each step of the way, we've had to make tradeoffs (e.g., sticking with a cheaper apartment and ramping up savings rate when income went up).
$120K salary means you can pay up to $3K in rent, although IMO you should pay less and put more money towards savings and non-rent expenses.
This is more than enough. You need about $1.5K with roommates and $2K without roommates to get a decent place in Manhattan (excluding Harlem and northward); with a budget up to $3K you will be fine.
Living in Manhattan really isn't that expensive unless you have kids or insist on being in a luxury building. You're single and making good money, so live in a walk-up, max your 401k, and enjoy the city. You can do all of that on $120K easy.

Totally agree.. key is, if you are a male at $120k, agree max out that 401k, and don't date a gold digger..
Don't be that sucker!!
