Even $4000 isn't much money. And you also want to work without a work visa? As an illegal alien (which is essentially what you'll be if you work without a work visa)? Who do you think is going to hire you? What employable skills do you have? What checkable references do you have?
Also, Corona isn't a wonderful area....suggest that you think about this again. About ten times.

I'm gonna guess that any warnings for Chemi to scratch his trip will prove fruitless as he stated that he would be coming to the States in October, so he is more likely than not, already here. I'm curious to get an update from him although I would venture that checking into this website is far down on his list of priorities.

I also hope to hear from him how the move went. If he doesnt like it in NYC, theres other areas he can go to, LA is very immigrant friendly.

I'm really curious as to how he's doing as well. Assuming he wound up coming, he's been here for some 5-6 weeks, probably enough time for him to get somewhat settled and into some sort of routine, or to be completely overwhelmed and return home. I'd wager that if we hear from him again, it won't be for several months. I hope he makes it. I'm rooting for him.

Mannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn this is whaaccccccccckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
thanks for caring everyone
I got in NY and stayed in a hostel in queens, dirty and full of roaches but hey, i dont complain. i met the man that owns it and i asked him for a job and he said he might employ me, the next day he said he cant but he gave me a number to his dominican cousin.
i kept on calling him for 3 days, and finally i got em (think his phone was off or somethin) the guy agreed to employ me with some other Africans as a painter.
i still work there and in the weekends i work at a local grocery store . i gotta tell you its sooo hard, waking up very early every morining and not sleeping much at all.
i live with some African guy i work with in the same apartment
WAT THE HELL IS UP WITH THE RATS?? MY LORD!
Queens isnt very alive as Manhattan, not as active but pretty dangerous, if you look at a cat the wrong way they'll cut you :/
i dont have any one to talk to on the net so i talk to you guys

Wow. Well, good to hear from you man! Good to hear that you made it to New York safe and sound.
I realize that things are rough at the moment but think positively. At least you have a job, and have a roof over your head. Like everyone warned, life is going to be difficult in your situation, at least for awhile. However, it's good to see at the least that you seem to have a strong work ethic which is important to putting yourself in a better situation.
A quick question. Weren't you going to be coming to the States with a friend? What happened to them?
A fews question that you perhaps won't be able to answer until you have more time to yourself, but what is your general impression of New York? Is it at all like you thought it would be? What was the thing that has surprised you the most about New York or the U.S.? Do you feel like you were well-prepared for the trip or do you feel like you were ill-informed and wished you had done more preparation or saved more money, etc. ahead of time? And lastly, do you think that you're going to stick it out here or not?
It's good to hear from you. This is without a doubt one of the more compelling threads on this board.

I recomend visiting http://www.forgotten-ny.com/ It a real representation ob NY by a real New Yorker.
For Cheap and safe beleive it or not the artist part of Williamsburg on the Greenpoint border by the Lormers Street stop on the L subway. Its a $2 fair and 5 minutes to Manhatten !!
Its the new Greenwich Village, lots of young people, musicians, students and you wont need a car.
The rats don’t bother people, sometimes the just want snacks. Countless times I have seen bored people playing this game where you bean them in the head down on the tracks with cheese nips wile waiting for the subway in the morning.
I remember Grandpa Al Lewis (Grampa Munster)cursing and throwing brooms at them when he had his bistro on Bleeker.
There are no people in the world like real New Yorkers including rats, cats and alligators. They even have these Monk parrots in Brooklyn that are feared buy the largest dogs, cats and people.
Some even say curse words
Im not kidding see: http://www.brooklynparrots.com

It will be much easier for you, if you have some family members or a very good friend(s). At 18 years old you need to have your head on your shoulder in order to move to NYC. There are some places that are not safe ,and you need people to teach you about these places. Also you can't be a lazy person in order to live in NYC, at your age you will definetly find it fun and adventurous to live in NYC, but always be alert and cautious, especially at your age. Good luck
