Kinda like the "chicken or the egg" argument. Which came first, the stingy, abusive government that takes advantage of its workers or the 'lying & bullying' union there to protect the rights of the workers. Seems pretty obvious to me.

I believe the stingy and abusive people that make up the police force came before the Union or the Government. Ouch!
But seriously...I think you should be appauled at the PBAs actions...and it is not only creating a self-fulfilled prophecy of destabilizing the police force, it is a spiteful, malicious, and toxic tactic....it is not doubt their perogative to take such action, but it clearly demonstrates the kind of people that make up the Union. No wonder they have a horrendous reputation. |

(maybe we can throw in 72 Virgins as well) Money talks and BS walks. How about giving some examples of what kind of adjustments to the NYPD would accomplish the goal of solving "its recruiting AND retention problems?" Maybe we should emulate what those other police departments did to be "better at recruiting." Oh, wait, that would be THEY RAISED THEIR SALARY TO REMAIN COMPETITIVE!!! But if you want to insist that they did something else, why don't you explain what you mean? Money Talks and BS Walks. |

I believe that the real problems that are causing recruitment AND retention problems are all the other issues BESIDES just salary (which I have already listed). Yes salary is a concern, and those that cannot see past the temporary 6 month lowered salary and recognize the ENORMOUS LIFETIME PENSION, LIFETIME MEDICAL for YOU AND YOUR FAMILY, 401k, and all the other perquisites and benefits, PLUS FULL RETIREMENT IN JUST 20 YEARS, then i say good luck to you in Nassau, San Jose, or wherever else you end up.
Yes the salary can be adjusted higher...but the REAL problems of the NYPD will not be solved by throwing more money at it. And if you throw in 72 virgins...sign me up! |

As a result, the NYPD doesn't have an edge. |

What exactly DID Nassau and San Jose and the rest do besides offer a competitive salary to become better than the NYPD at recruitment and retention?

NYPD is the NYPD...isn't that the edge that keeps recruits coming (and yes they are still coming!). The fact remains that the NYPD, no matter how the force and the Union wants to spin it, remains the PREMIERE choice for police officers, AND and EXCELLENT road to financial security and economic comfort, ESPECIALLY for those with little/bad educations, as well as those who are not "connected."

If you think the NYPD is the PREMIER choice for police officers, then you are seriously misinformed. The fact is, other PD's can lure NYPD cops away. The NYPD CANNOT lure cops away from Nassau or San Jose. THAT is NOT Premiere by any reasonable person's definition. |

I know cops as well, and I know residents of NYC too. And EVERYONE is leaving for money, better quality of life, less hassles, more space, better schools, better weather..etc. This is nothing unique to the NYPD..it is happening across the board. People are fed up with the cost of living in this city, and other areas are more attractive than ever...and people are jumping ship across the board.
However, the NYPD would have you believe the exodus is unique to them and SOLELY due to salary..and we all know that to be untrue. |

Guy,
I'd be curious to know how many NYPD officers you actually know, because you seem to be misinformed on a few things. Please describe the ENORMOUS pension, because I believe the average officer retiring after 20 years would actually have a pretty small pension... Also, I believe you are mistaken when you say: "the NYPD would have you believe the exodus is unique to them and SOLELY due to salary..and we all know that to be untrue." I'm pretty sure that if you added 20 or 30K in salary, the NYPD's recruitment problem would disappear. Finally, it seems that you are a sort of cop-hater. This city needs people like you to understand how difficult it is to go to work every day wondering if you'll ever see your wife and kids again. It's easy, in hindisght, to criticize police actions when things go wrong, but many officers have to make extremely difficult, life-or-death decisions in the blink of an eye. It's the hate-mongers that don't understand this that make the job much more difficult and inflame tensions unnecessarily. |
