-Taxes
-Heating
-Water
-Repairs
-Insurance
-and whatever other miscellaneous, like upgrading windows, new roof ev ery 5-10 years, landscaping/yard possibly, responsible for maintaing a clean sidewalk and street DAILY, and garbage.

And that's just off the top of my head! You can pay $1,600 and put the $1,000 difference in investments and do FAR better, and live FAR BETTER, without the headaches/hassles/immense debts of home "ownership." Then again...you do have the "priviledge" of saying you own a house. Not everyone should own a house, or can, which is why you are seeing massive defaults...on a cop's salary...I would say it is wise NOT to own...but rent instead.
I asked my mother who bought a house 5 - 6 years ago how much she is paying in mortgage and she told me around 1600. This house has 5 bedrooms and 3 bathroom. Now go to Bronx and get a 3 bedroom apartment in a good neighborhood and you be paying 1500 - 1800. While the housing price is going down, rent for apartments are still going up. Those who can afford to buy a house are leaving the city to buy a house in Reading,PA because with what they pay in rent here they pay the mortgage , car insurance and gasoline.

When I make calculations I take it from data that is available to everyone to do. But most people wouldn't take the time to do the calculations themselves. I even asked a friend of mine to check my calculations. I major in mechanical engineering in college. I was offer jobs to work for the MTA and other company, but I always wanted to be a cop.

The city has the money it just doesn't want to pay. Look at the idea of the mayor that everyone pay $8 to go below 60th street in the city. What about those who live below 60th street who want to go up north why should they pay $8 too. The reason that wasn't going to be allow is because the mayor's rich friends weren't going to allow it.

I have a question for you guywithacause. Lets say that you are looking for a doctor to do a surgery. Doctor A wants 42k but doctor B wants 125K. What would you do go with Doctor A or B and why ? If you don't pick one then let me know why you didn't.

Knight...are you planning on buying a house 5-6 years ago? If so then your numbers may be accurate, however we are talking about TODAY. And TODAY you cannot buy yourself a house with 3 bedrooms for $1,600 a month in mortgage, unless of course you are putting a HUGE amount down. But again, even if you were only paying $1,600 a month, you would ALSO be paying all the other fees I already listed....whereas you would not as a renter.

But hey...what do I know! Go buy a house and spend away!

Its a simple question of who you want to do a surgery it's not a so hard. You can even answer the question with a question.

How about this...if the going rate for the surgery is $42,000....I would pay $42,000...if the going rate is $120,000...I would pay $120,000. Let's move on now!

First thank you for answering my question. Second if someone would have asked me the same question. I would have ask why is Doc B charging so much more. Remember you get what you pay for.

The national rate for PO compare to other major cities is 90k+. This is why the city should pay more it's officer.

Look at this way if they offer at least 90K they would have more people with a BA or maybe with a master degree.

Someone with a degree is most likely to resolve the problems than those who don't.

Look at colleges when they have jobs fairs (John Jay College) everyone was singing up to become PO with other PDs but not with NYPD and many students say it was because of low pay.

Someone with a low education can cause more problems than resolve. You just need to take a look at the President of USA. Got Cs and Ds in high school and some how was able to go to one of top Ivy schools in the country. Got elected as president and look at the mess he is going to leave. he double the budget deficit, got us into a War that there is no end to it, high inflation, high fuel and food, and has given away this country to the top 1%. It took him 7 years to realized that Global Warming exist and it may take him longer to know that if you help those are bottom it will benefit those on top. If you put more money into the poor pockets then they will buy stuff. But if you give it to the rich instead who own the businesses then and when they see that no one is buying their products then they are not going to spend (invest or higher more employees) it, they are going to keep in their bank accounts. A tree grows from the bottom to the top not from the top to the bottom. Same thing with money give it to the poor to spend and it will end up on the top.

Trust me if the NYPD top pay is around 90K they get more colleges students with degrees and it would be a better force. Smart people know they going to go where the money is at. It's only a matter time before or the top and best cops leave the force because of retirement or better paying jobs and then the NYPD is stuck with officers who wouldn't be allow in other PDs. Crime will go up. It's already up this year in another 3 - 5 years people will start asking what is going on.

Knight...your sentiments are well taken. All I can say...is that if you believe the national rate for cops is $90K then I can see why you believe cops are underpaid. However, that is not the national rate for cops in the country....with that kind of hot air you should really be a Union boss.

very funny guywithacause.

That is the rate compare other major cities in this country and the world (Developed countries only).

You can't compare a PO from NYC to PO from a small city in Kansas. There many reasons why you can't compare them.

Also it is wrong to have the biggest and one of the richest city in the world paying its PO so low. It is an embarrassment to be the richest nation in the world and have 45 million people who can't afford health insurance.

Also as you can see less and less people are applying for the NYPD and more officers are leaving. How long do think it will be before those who think like you (Guywithacause) realized things have to change especially with salary. Look at my example about the president. The damage he has caused will take years to undo. Having the best of the finest leaving will take at least 10 years to fix once they decide to fix it.

No, but the local rate is about 80K. Some dept's in our area are making more than 80K BASE SALARY, some are making less, around 75K. If you take out the NYPD, the avg. is probably around 80K.
