Default Outrageous NYPD Salary

First of all, a salute to all of the men and women in NYPD, you're not only New York's Finest, you're the world's finest....(Dallas comes second, lol.) But...HOW THE HELL DO YOU MAKE IT IN THIS CITY WITH YOUR SALARY?!?!?!?! YOU PROTECT US, SHOOT AND GET SHOT FOR US!!!! WHY CAN'T WE PAY YOU MORE?!?!?! THIS SERIOUSLY FRUSTRATES ME!

Trust me, it is frustrating to more than you!!

The city can certainly afford to pay more, but it refuses. The main reason that salaries are at this level is because city hall has maintained that police salaries stay in-line or have parity with all of the other city workers. The mayor argues that if the city gives cops a substantial raise then the firefighters, sanitation union and all the other city workers will argue for a similar percentage raise. Meanwhile, officers in NJ & LI and even the state police have seen their salaries increase to almost double in some cases.

Now I don't begrudge any other union for trying to get the most for their members and they all work hard in dangerous in undesirable circumstances. But when comparing the salaries of firemen & sanitationmen to other departments across the country the NYC agencies are among the highest in the nation.

If it frustrates us, how much do you think it frustrates the men and women in NYPD. Protecting the citizens of the city and going home to your one bedroom apartment, working your ass off to try to give your kids the things you never had, but there's a problem...you don't make enough....the cycle starts again!

That's why so many of them have to work second jobs are try to work as much overtime as possible. Unfortunately, the kids are the ones who suffer the most because it takes away from quality family time... especially if mom has to work, too.

Why New York's Sanitation Workers Earn More Than Police - New York Times

An old editorial, but seems that it's never changed.

Garbagemen making more than patrolmen, only in NYC, literally.

I've never heard of a a case of any one being forced to take the job, if the pay is too low why are so many taking the job?

^^ I agree. I would love to just sit behind a parts counter at Ford all day but I decided to go to college and take a less desirable job so I can make a decent living.

And of course someone needs to do it and I fully respect them for taking the position and realize that many of them willingly make the sacrifice to fulfill the position.

As a New Yorker, I am embarrassed at the salaries paid to our uniformed service folks. My gratitude for their sacrifice (esp. the PD and FD) is beyond words' ability to express.

Default APVBGUY Do you have your head stuck in a hole

NYPD can't find enough people to take the job, they are over 5000 police officer's behind what the need, even though they have spent 10's of millions trying to recruit, what happened to the 60 college credits you used to need......... on top of that they have lowered the standard to a new time LOW........you are now being protected by thugs and criminals, half of the new recruits wouldn't even made it on the job, 5 years ago....................i have over 30 friends on the job and they are counting the days when they can leave......none of them are taking promotion test because they don't want to be in charge of all these bad recruits.......................have you read the paper lately the are locking these recruits up every week, 1 guy killed his girlfriend, another 2 nypd finest were robbing drug houses in NJ, remember you are stuck with these cops for 20 years now.............................Con't wait till you have to interact with one of these sch.olars.........P>S> i know they are all not bad but remember " YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR".....

being a cop is one of those careers that you take because the satisfaction of what you do for a living means more than the pay....with that being said, their salary is still too low. and thats exactly why you see cops in the paper for a bunch of petty crimes nowadays. because they cant make it on $25,100.
