Can you tell by just going about your daily business, whether the person walking down the street is native to the city or a transplant from say Iowa? In other words, what characteristics give it away?.

For the most part yes, but mostly depends on the neighborhood. For example in Park Slope or Forest Hills it can get more tricky. You'll also have people in Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Ridgewood, Astoria or LIC in which you can't really tell. In rougher nabes it is more obvious, like in Bushwick or Bed-Stuy.

I can easily spot Midwestern transplants being native to Michigan. It has to do with an "accent"... or complete lack thereof... depending on how you want to look at it. It's gotten to the point where, within 2 minutes, I can typically get even the state correct. Yay me!

If you see a guy sproting a goatee, van dyke or clean cut shaven face, most likely he is a local, a man that is sporting a hipster beard is most likely a transplant. Other obvious signs are someone with blonde hair. The only way one can tell if someone is a transplant or not is by the way they speak. Even speak its still difficult like example if a Bronxite or Brooklynite went away to a 4 year college that is attended by culturally homogenous neutral voice toned suburbanites, I can guarantee that Native New Yorker will loose his or her accent upon graduation when moving back to the city.

No because everybody dresses the same out here. The only true way to find out would be to actually talk to the person(s).

Most of my native New Yorker friends don't have an accent, I only really found out by talking to them.

I can tell the transplants by the different neighborhoods I go to.

Sunset Park, is a classic. I come from there, I know who's a transplant and who ain't LOL.

Same with Carroll Gardens, Gowanus, park Slope. I'm a native Brooklynite, I can just tell.
