We are moving down from Putnam County to Manhattan, we are purchasing a coop in the UES around 65/2nd ave. Looking for a Catholic Church with a strong family attendance with a school affiliated with it. Our son is 4 and we have another on the way and we would prefer that their school be affiliated with the church we attend. Anywhere in Manhattan south of 96th is fine.

Thank you!

Try St. Ignatius.

I'm not Catholic and know nothing about the church, but I've met a few parents who've sent their kids to Holy Name on the Upper West Side and were very pleased with it, both academically and socially. Might be worth checking out:

The local parishes tend to be either ethnically parochial or less family oriented. Your best bet would be St. Monica's on 79th, it has a family mass as well well as high mass and it's "local primary school" is St. Stephen's of Hungary.

St. Ignatius and Epiphany have the best reputations but generally parochial schools are very similar in terms of quality. There is also Academy of St. Josephs in Washington Sq. which is an independent Catholic school - more expensive but would offer smaller class sizes.

I went to a Novus Ordo mass recently as St. Patrick's Cathedral. At one point during the Mass you had to shake the hands of the people directly beside you, in the pew behind, and the pew in front and says "Peace Be With You." It was extremely uncomfortable. No wonder Catholics are leaving the Church in droves, being expected to partake of such tomfoolery.

You didn't have to do that with the old Latin Mass.

I would suggest finding a Catholic Church that uses the Latin Mass, and rejects Vatican II.

I'm going to third the recommendation for St. Ignatius. It has an excellent grammar school and a terrific Family Mass there every Sunday morning, in addition to their Family Ministry. This is my husband's parish and everyone I've met at church events has been lovely.

St. Ignatius is $7350 per Catholic child, a couple G's more for non-catholics.
