The bottom line is retirement in NYC you'll need to have either moved up socioeconomically (and ideally have purchased your own property), or if you were working class (read poor) you'll need some sort of housing or government subsidies in old age.

And for the record through nursing homes and other facilities (including hospitals) retirement havens in the South do spend a lot of government money. Medicare and medicaid.

I agree that only the elderly and disabled should be giving special privileges in regards to housing and government benefits. People that can work should not be giving life-time housing and government. A lot of people abuse the system with their welfare babies, etc. I understand that people fall on hard-time and this is why there should be a limit in order for people to be able to get back on their feet.

Actually NC is mid-range when it comes to retirement tax issues. There are better states in the south. NY is terrible.
