I'm going to the CUNY student housing in east/spanish harlem. I"ll be taking the 6 from 116th to the graduate center in midtown, probably coming back late. I know neighborhoods like this can change from okay to dangerous block by block, I'm curious if anybody has any first-hand experience in this area and can tell me some places to avoid.

The neighborhood sucks, no two ways about it but more dreary and noisy than unsafe.
But just be careful at night, walk fast and sober and you should be okay.

How close will you be living to the subway stop?

Yeah, I walked around a bit and it seemed safe for the most part, there were plenty of kids walking around alone, and old people walking dogs, etc. But I was only there at like 3 in the afternoon, and I have no idea what my schedule will be like next year, but I'm sure I'll be getting back late beause PhD students are apparently worked like crazy...

I'm not really worried about getting stabbed or shot or anything, I'm more worried about something like some kid grabbing my phone out of my pocket/hands and then running away. It's always kids lol

It'll probably help that I'll be living nearly across the street from the 25th precinct...

by the way, I am also curious for any things people DO recommend around. Like restaurants etc.

Stuff besides hispanic food, which is so plentiful I can find it myself lol

Well, you have the Mall (or Mallette) at the East end of of 117th. Wonderful food shopping at ALDI's, a Target, Petgo, Costco, Bob's Crappy Furniture and T.J. Maxx.

For restaurants????? There's an Applebee's next to the mall, if that is your thing. Last year, there used to be a terrific hole in the wall fish/ fish and chips place at 115th and Second, but I think they went under.
We heard Patsy's was good Italian but it seems to be failing and now looks like Pizza only.

Basically we just use the area for occasional food shopping. For us it's a couple mile bus trip including a long walk to the mall.

There are lots of good, cheap restaurants along the avenues in East Harlem. Obviously tons of Latin restaurants (mostly Mexican, Dominican or Puerto Rican) and lots of cheaper hipster-type restaurants, esp. on 3rd and Lex.

Patsys was always just a pizzeria. It's called Patsy's Pizza. You might be conflating it with Patsy's in Midtown, which is an upscale Italian restaurant famous for being the hangout of Sinatra and the Brat Pack. The two places aren't related.

Stay off of Lexington, and the wagner/taino towers vicinity at night, and you'll be okay. don't even get a sandwich from the store around there. at night from 115th to 117th there are a multitude of cops near the train so you'll be alright.
