How does this work with MTA jobs?
Heres my situation, last november i filled out an application for exam 5603 structure maintainers groub b (masons). Now unlike most civil service jobs this position didnt have a written test. Instead its a two part test, first you have to qualify for the education and experience test ( your work history in that specific field). If you pass that, then youre SUPPOSED to take a pratical test to be hired. There are a few titles in MTA where its this process as opposed to a written exam.

Last month ( April 2015) before even receiving a score for the education / experience part of the exam, i received a letter from MTA to come down to livingston st, to take a drug test because im being considered for a temporary / provisional structure maintainer. Long story short i was sworn in two weeks ago as a temporary structure maintainer.

Its the job i wanted and signed up for but not as a temp. So im wondering whats the odds of one day them just telling me they dont need my services anymore even before getting a chance to become permanent? Pardon the long post just wanted to explain as much as possible.

Any feedback on this topic will be appreciated Thanks in advance

Well, you did mention it a few time that it's temporary, so you have no expectation of it ever going permanent.

In situation such as these regardless whether it's the MTA or not I would continue looking for a permanent gig if that is what you're looking for.

Its usually a 1 year probation and then once you last the 1 year, you are permanent. This is a TWU union position correct?

Ive tried the nyctransitforums employment section its dry over there for some reason. Based off of the info. I been able to collect MTA needed people in this position before they could even establish a list so they started calling people with best score based off their work experience (the first test i spoke about) for temporary jobs. And we will continue to be temporary until we take and pass the pratical test, when will that be noone knows that sucks. Whats most disturbing is if someone off the street tatsake the pratical and score higher than you they can bump you out even though youre on the job already. MTA hires alot of temps in skilled trades before they can even get to take a pratical test. Happens alot with the electrical positions ex RCI, CI etc. Iam going for it, my first day is in two weeks. Do what i have to do and let GOD do his work. Thanks for you guys input
