Im 18 looking to move out. Cities I'm considering NYC, Seattle, Honolulu, Portland, San Francisco. The things I'm looking for in a city in this order is good air quality so nothing like Los Angeles. It's ok if the living costs are high as long as it's doable I'm going to be getting a minimum wage job with tips and if I have to i'll get roommates, plus I live in California so I'm used to high living costs. Next would be the city has to be as entertaining as possible, lot's of things to do with people who are outgoing and friendly. So my questions are which city would be the best for me with the least air pollution it doesn't have to be the cities I listed. Thanks.

Not NY. It's not doable on minimum wage. I know you said "with tips" but unless you're pulling in at LEAST $50,000, then it's not the right city to move to. Also the 50K should be reported income as landlords want proof you're making 40x the rent per year. So cash tips that you don't report to the IRS won't cut it.

The general US forum would probably be a better place for your question. You can click the red triangle in the upper right part of your post and ask a moderator to move it for you. http://www.city-data.com/forum/general-u-s/

Thanks for the reply. So how about if I had roommates I'm also not apposed to living in the boroughs like staten island etc. Is that still not doable on minimum wage plus tips full time?

What is the annual salary of someone who makes minimum wage plus tips? That's sort of vague.

Anyway, regardless of what figures you come up with, there are many many reasons (too many to list) why it's not a good idea to move to NYC for a minimum wage job.

Try reading some older threads. You can search the forum for the keyword "budget" and that might bring some up some of the past threads on people trying to make it here on low salaries.

you will be in for a very rude awakening moving to nyc with no skills and on minimum wage.

However it can be exciting and a big learning experience..what is your plan in life?

Well from the math I did if i worked full time I'm pretty sure I could afford around $1,000 per month on a room to rent in the boroughs. I would say the salary is around $20,000. And so if I can't afford living in NYC would you recommend any other cities? I know this is in the new york forum but I'm open to other suggestions.

I plan on attending a Community College for around 2 years and getting and English degree while getting some work experience. Basically I don't need to relocate to a permanent city just for a couple years while I figure out what kind of career I want.

To begin with, why are you only considering expensive cities? Definitely a disaster in the making.

MAYBE try Seattle since they have that $15/minimum wage thing.

But if you move to NYC with no education, experience, connections or skills then damn....you'll get chomped up and spit right back out to the bumblefunk town that you came from REAL QUICK. There's tons of people even WITH education, experience and skills who struggle to find work here. Do you even have any savings?

If you're looking for good air quality then scratch NYC off your list completely.

why not stay in California? What is driving you out? You should go to school and get a part-time job and after you graduate college with a degree and have an ample work history then you can move to whatever city you want.
