Hello everyone. Just wanted to get some suggestions on what neighborhoods could be a good fit for a young family with 1 small child and a 2nd one due in December.
eventually we want to leave NY for greener pastures but due to the upcoming baby, we will stay for 1 more year in NY. having said that, Schools are not important at the moment. What is important is safety and decent transportation options.
We're currently in astoria queens, renting a small 550 sqf junior 4(small 1br with office room), dated apartment in a private house.
Our current rent is $1500, and we'd like to stay under $2,500 for a 2br or ( 》700sqf ) junior 4.
What hidden gems would you recommend?
I hear Ridgewood, Jackson heights, Elmhurst, Kingston and windsor terrace are all good affordable options.
Btw, I commute to downtown brooklyn and wife to lower Manhattan.
I know this is kind of a long post so Thanks for reading it.
any helpful input is appreciated.

I think Jackson Heights might be better than Elmhurst, just because it may be easier to meet like-minded families. JH is very family-oriented and has a lot of baby and kid activities. Check out Story Garden, Mimi for Me Yoga (has kids' classes), Kids Music Together, Super Kickers Soccer, 78th Play Street, etc. Plus if you sign up for JHfamilies Yahoo email list, you can find other parents more easily. I think Bay Ridge, Brooklyn could be a good option as well since you are travelling to Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan.
I don't know what Kingston means as an area -- I've never heard of it. Windsor Terrace would probably be nice but think it could be more than what your budget calls for.
If you like Astoria, you'll like Ridgewood more. It is closer to Lower Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn, more affordable, and more family oriented. Its your best bet among the neighborhoods you listed, although not sure where Kingston is.
Anywhere on the East Shore of SI will meet your commuting, price point and safety criteria comfortably. The commute to downtown Bk will be just under 90 minutes and to lower Manhattan approximately 60 by express bus.
Jackson Heights, you can get a nice big 2 bedroom for 2500 or less and it's more family oriented.
there is a playstreet in the summer on 78th with lots of activities.
better transit than astoria can get you into manhattan in 30min.
