I gather that Merrick is somewhere on Long Island, not too far, right? Are there any transit alternatives, other than the LIRR?

Babylon LIRR trains stop at Merrick. Other alternatives would be car service. It's about an hour away.

I guess one could take the subway to Jamaica, Queens and from there take 2-3 buses to Merrick.

You can take the subway to Jamaica, take the N4 to Freeport, and then take the N19 to Merrick (or walk, depending on which part of Merrick you're going to).

I think you get an additional free transfer in one direction. So it'll be $2.75 in one direction, but $5.50 in the other direction (unless you cut the N19 out of the picture entirely and just walk from Freeport to Merrick).

Thanks, guys. You convinced me that the LIRR is the best option for lazy, impatient people like me.

Expensive, though!
