Hello - my daughter just graduated from college and moved to NYC. She is apt hunting and has an interest in a place on Lenox at 131st. We have been to NYC several times, but not much in this neighborhood that I can remember. She went to high school in Chicago, and is pretty St smart, but ... Need your advice as to safety, crime, gangs, subway to mid-town, etc. Any quick suggestions you have are greatly appreciated.
In general, I am wondering about:

Do there seem to be many families on the street day and night?
Are there projects nearby ? or on the way to and from subway?
How close are grocery stores? Some restaurants?
Are there lots of guys or groups, hanging out on the street?
What's the subway stop look like at night?
Where is the closest Police precinct?
Does there seem to be a Police presence in the neighborhood?
Are there security camera's in the neighborhood on street posts/lights?
How well lighted is Lenox?

thanks for your inputs!

Dispute leads to shooting of man, woman in Harlem: cops | New York's PIX11 / WPIX-TV

There is something just about every day but I do not have time to look them all up.

There was a big bust a few years ago of a kind of center above 135th, drugs, guns, what-have-you, don't know if it has improved because of this or whether they regrouped after the smoke died down.

Yes, there are also a lot of "new" restaurants and any moment a Harlem yahoo-er will show up and tell you how great the area is, multi-cultural and all. The fact remains that it is the 'hood.

And - there are projects.

Here is a story about one of the big busts:

The gun-running is a big part of the culture there, ACP, FDB, St. Nicholas - horizontally. It would depend whether someone minds living around that culture, and also the trash and litter and various aspects of the "lifestyle."
