Visiting friends tomorrow landing at 430 pm then driving the Bedminster, NJ. I've driven in the NYC a lot when lived in the area for a number of years.
Which route to NJ is least worst this time of day? Northern across GW bridge, through mdtwon then tunnel to NJ, or southern route acros Staten Island to NJ?
We lived near our friends so know our way around NJ just not from NYC this time of day nor in recent traffic patterns.
Thanks for any guidance. My trip is tomorrow leaving home mid morning tomorrow.
You're asking us to choose b/w terrible traffic, terrible traffic and terrible traffic - you realize that right? I'd fly in and find a place to chill for a couple of hours.
Take the Q70 Ltd bus to Roosevelt and 74th. Transfer to the E train and ride to Penn Station. From there catch a NJT train to Newark Penn Station. There's an Enterprise Rental Car location right at Newark Penn. According to MTA's trip planner, you should get to Penn Station in about 45 minutes. Another 20 minute train ride to Newark - total travel time a bit over an hour. Good luck trying to get anywhere in Jersey quicker than that by driving from LaGuardia.
I'd go with the GWB to I95 to I80 to the 287. I would absolutely avoid the southern route through Staten Island since it would involve the BQE, which is total nightmare at 4:30 on any given week day.
I had to drive from the Jersey shore area to LaGuardia a number of times last year for my job. The best route 99% of the time was over the GWB. Once or twice something was so backed up that it was easier to cut through the city and take the Holland Tunnel. The drive through Staten Island, while the shortest in miles, was never the fastest route available.
jkub pretty much said it all, though. All choices are terrible.
I survived, gosh the traffic was a nightmare. I took the Staten Island route recommended by ways. Horrible narrow torn up road for sure. It took 2 hours on the nose.. Got on the road by 530pm.
