If you want to live alone, you won't be able to find a place for under $1000 including all utility expenses, except maybe the Bronx or with really LOW standards. A roommate in North Manhattan, south or east of Prospect Park (Kensington, Sunset Park, Flatbush, Crown Heights, etc), or Queens (Woodside, Ditmars, Sunnyside, Elmhurst, etc). You may have to adjust your living standards a bit, but that's true for all but the super rich.

If you can pay $1300, you might find something for just you, though.

At this point, I wouldn't mind living in a small micro studio if it meant being able to live alone. Are there any area on the outskirts of New York City that have good public transportation that leads to the heart of NYC?
