I've been looking at yeshiva university and I'm not really sure if the area is safe? It's right near high bridge park and the ending of the Washington bridge? Is it a safe place for a girl to walk alone? Thanks.

Yah, those yeshiva bochers are scary sometimes.

Seriously, if you tense up walking around people of color you will always feel on edge, but if you can get over that, you'll be better off. Stay aware of your environment and keep those earbuds out of your ears, don't walk around texting. Just walk purposefully and alert at night, with some confidence. Look up and about.

Daytime's no issue; coming home from late-night classes try to walk with other students when you can.

I lived last year at B'way and 160th. Yeshiva's up at Amsterdam/ 181st.

I visited up there several weekday afternoons, just because someone I know from out-of-town was applying there and had appointments, so I went along and hung out nearby so she'd feel super okay before those interviews and not get lost.

My memory is that Broadway @ 181 was full of stores and life, and I felt very comfortable and happy to be there. It's mostly Dominican and family-friendly especially woman-to-woman if you engage a little with female store workers, or know any Spanish just to greet. I found that friendly.

But the large Amsterdam buildings of the uni and residences around it lacked stores and people out-and-about. There were a few pizza places for students on Amsterdam, and one kosher-Chinese fusion restaurant that looked pretty good.

It could have just been the time of day, though. I feel safest when streets are full of people, and the times I was hanging out on Amsterdam itself felt a little bit empty mid-day. The university buildings take up many blocks. Maybe everyone was inside at school, and it's different in early evening in a positive way.

Hopefully others who know those blocks in more detail 24/7 can fill you in better.

No girls walk in this area alone, ever. Make sure you find a pimp to always escort you.
