Transit in NYC
Always been curious to hear real people on this one. How is transit in NYC?
Are the subways really that crowded?
Are certain lines crowded only during rish?
Are others crowded all day?
Are others can-find-a-seat all day?
Is directionality important (Downtown VS Uptown) with time?
On buses
How is the bus network? Does it connect well with the subway?
Do buses run often?
Are the buses crowded, etc?
Lastly, is transit in NYC safe? I know at one time it was not.

Subways are crowded at rush hour. REALLY crowded. But some lines are worse than others.
I've pretty much always felt safe in the subway, and I've been traveling on them for well over 50 years. The subway is, without a doubt, the fastest way to get anywhere in New York City.
If you have a LOT of time on your hands, you can take a bus.

Probably yes on all questions, but it depends.
Subways are usually really crowded during rush hour. Most of the times during rush hour you can't find a seat. I live at the end of the line though so usually I'm pretty lucky with that.
The subways are really dirty and rundown compared to other networks. MTA plans on fixing this, but progress has been slow at the moment.
Buses are usually pretty decent. They are really slow in Manhattan because the traffic is real bad.
Transit is pretty safe. If you ride the bus or subway in the middle of the night thru a bad neighborhood, then perhaps it isn't THAT safe, but generally it is pretty safe.

Logically, yes. That's why it's called rush hour.

Some lines will be crowded on non-rush hours, and other will be near empty. Again, it depends on the time and route.

Do you mean is service equal or not during the entire route? It should be.

Is it safe, no. Is it better than it was 15-20 years ago, of course.

It's running at overcapacity. Nothing can be done until they finish the new subway route along 2nd Av. and hopefully crowds along Lex. will carry over to 2nd Av.

did you ever see the train that runs along 6th avenue, turns east after 57th street, has a station at lex/3rd ave and 63rd street (beautiful deep tiled station with cool benches) and ends at roosevelt island? i forgot the line, is it the Q line? when was that lex/3rd and 63rd street station opened?

Late 80s, and it's currently the F, running all the way to Jamaica from there.

that station doesn't seem like a typical NY city subway station. Similar to the 49th street and 7th Avenue on the R and N station but better
Why on earth was the 49th street and 7th Ave station given the orange tile treatment and not other stations? As far back as 1979 I recalled it had those orange tiles which made it appear more attractive and safer than other stations

I could not disagree more. The E/F are the worst I have been on, as well as the lack of manners. For years I took the E to the 6 and the Roosevelt Ave stop was TERRIBLE. Not to mention the crowd and the lack of respect or manners. Some lines seem to have more pushing and shoving and blocking the doors than others. My vote is for the E, in queens!!
