Safety Check: Crown Heights at Utica St. Station (4 train) (New York: neighborhood, public school)

Hi all...can someone please give me an idea as to the general safety of the Crown Heights neighborhood for a young white female completely unfamiliar with the area? The visit would be during daytime hours.

The exact location is the 4 train stop to Utica (Utica St. at Eastern Parkway) walking several blocks down Utica to E New York Ave at the intersection of E New York and Troy Ave.

It's been a long time since I've been to this area so I really can't offer her any useful commentary on the area esp considering my experiences as a black male greatly differ.

I am a white male and have walked in the area during the day (mostly right around the subway station). It certainly is not a nice neighborhood and you may get a few "snowflake" catcalls but if you look like you have a purpose, stick to the main drags, and get out before dark you should make it out alive.

Why not take the 2/5 train to Sterling and walk from east to west - wouldn't that walk be a little more pleasant? I've been in those areas before and it seemed to me that the closer I got to Utica the worse it was, but it's been a few years so I am definitely not an authority. It's just a suggestion as it looks like the end location is equidistant from the Utica stop as it is from Sterling St.

You'd probably have a better sense than I. Bronx native transplanted to Queens so Brooklyn is not my stomping ground. Dated a girl in the general vicinity, but it was years back.

yeah, keep asking because I am really just basing this on vague memories of driving around these areas about 2 years ago. I was driving around to see what the areas looked like so I was trying to pay attention but I am not sure of specific streets.

during the day is fine. utica and eastern pkwy is a very busy intersection. there is not as much foot traffic on eny ave, so once you get there you may have to take a little precaution, as in just being a little more aware of her surroundings. there's a housing project on eny ave between troy and schenectady but dont worry, its for old people.

Thanks, Seventh. What type of road is eny ave? Industrial, housing, etc?? I'm wondering if I should offer to "chaperone" her, but it would be really inconvenient for me and I don't want to give her the impression that its a worse neighborhood than it actually is. I like to be pragmatic, but I just don't know enough about this hood to take that approach here.

eny between utica and schenectady is residential...there's a corner store, supermarket and an auto repair place or tire shop on the corners of eny ave and schenectady. that corner may be a little funny, may be a couple people hanging outside of the store, if she feels unsafe she doesnt have to walk on that side. at the corner of eny and troy is a public school (junior high), another auto repair, and a supermartket i believe. its just that for some reason eny ave doesnt have that much foot traffic. but its daytime so everything should be cool. i know that area like the back of my hand i hang out in crown heights a lot. she doesnt need an escort. if it was nighttime i would say yes, escort her because there may be some hood elements she's not used to seeing and she may get nervous, and plus eny ave is really desolate at nighttime. i've walked eny ave from albany to utica at night and only passed 2 people on the street. but daytime is cool.

Tell her to take a cab from the subway to her destination.... for the trip back ask if the cab has a cel phone & she can call him for a ride back. either that or set up a predetemined time for him to pick up... there are usually gypsy cabs waiting around the station. It is a little bit of a walk, especially on the return since it is uphill.
