The OP said he wanted to live in a desirable neighborhood. It is his CHOICE and HIS money, not anyone else's. Some people were just doing as he asked and gave him info on those areas.
If they are established in NYC and make 240k (over ten years that is 2,400,000) they should have easily been able to afford say a 20 year mortgage on an one million dollar place.
Either you're lying about your family or they are lying about their salary.
I know people who made far less than 200k who are homeowners in NYC.
For once I agree with NyWriterdude....UKWildcat is either full of hot air or knows people who are full of it. Some people make it seem NYC is totally unaffordable.....totally untrue.
Not so nice studio apartments are hard to find at $2000/month in Manhattan. Add $200/month in cell phone, internet, and other utilities - expect your housing to cost you $27,000.
Groceries are expensive too - unless you exclusively shop at Trader Joe's. Between this and restaurants expect to spend $10,000.
Don't forget vacation and such.
I happen to live off $100/week in Manhattan and Brooklyn - and write about this on New York Nomads - - but that's because I don't pay rent and eat pretty raw and otherwise stick to secondhand items/apparel.
$80k is enough technically but it would be a far more comfortable situation to split a place 2 or 3 ways if hell bent on living in Manhattan. Wouldn't leave you with a lot left over after paying a $2,000 rent bill plus all utilities on your own.
95th Street yes, but only between First and Third Aves.

You can find studios around 1300 in the Bronx or if you go further out in Queens or Brooklyn (not the trendiest neighborhoods) and studios would cost probably 1500 or so in Upper Manhattan.

Agreed. There are plenty of reasonably priced rentals which would allow you to live very comfortably off of $80k in the NYC metro area.
$80k is a scrapping by salary here if single living alone. Most folks like that have to be roomies to get savings and eat cheap Asian food as everything else here is overpriced.
