True. I was in Woodhaven 2 nights ago actually. It's a pretty ugly Queens neighborhood.

I find this a little surprising.
I spent many a late night coming home from the Bwy / ENY station (taking the B83 to Starrett from there) and never had an issue. Remember also that the transit police station is right there (District 33) inside the station, so that might add to it as there's always cops all over the station.
I used to date someone in that part of Woodhaven a few years back and while there may have been a few undesirables hanging at the corner store by the station, I never felt unsafe walking around there.
I find the south Williamsburg / Bushwick stops on the J train more scary than the stops by Woodhaven to be honest, but even those areas are slowly changing.

OP, the area you're talking about is still very nice. That's near the park. The golf course and tennis courts are there and a dog run. I wouldn't recommend going below that towards Franklin K. Lane along Jamaica Ave. Unless, of course you like hanging out in cemetaries :-)

That especific corner of Woodhaven is quite nice. That's maybe one of the nicest areas of Woodhaven. I used to go play tennis over there, and the park and sourrinding areas are very nice.
It gets trashy when you approach Jamaica Ave, but by the park is a different story.
As for safety, I would say you should be ok, it's not a dangerous neighborhood but should always be alert regardless.

Hello I lived a few blocks from here for many years. (More than 20)
The J/Z @ 85th Street /Forest Parkway will be your stop. I love the J train. very reliable. And very rarely taken out of service. It takes you to the Suphtin Blvd Station where you can catch the E into the city one way & to Broad Street in the Financial District
The neighbor hood is safe. I taught English on 92nd street and walked home at 11 pm in the dead of winter (most nights accompanied w/ my husband) but on rare occasions solo, never a problem.
The "problem" w/ the area is over population. Very heavy "new to the country" population. Many ppl you will run into cannot speak English.
A rash of day laborers were starting to line up along the Avenue right before I left in Aug 2011 on the corner of 85th & Jamaica (1 block from where you will be) I dont know if they are still there - Chase bank was doing its best to get them away. (thats where they woulds sit all day looking for work)
The area is mainly families with lots and lots of small kids, and a lot of single men who live in the "dormitoris". Converted private houses that now function as single room occupancy units. These tend to be very loud and the front stoops littered with trash and stray men who chain smoke for hours while talking on the phone. Also very loud house parties are hosted in these places for $$. These parties can (and do) last until 7 or 8am the following day.
The area has a great Fire dept . (3 min response time the both times I needed them) but the hospitals are THE WORST (Jamaica is bad but Elmhurst will kill you if you dont arrive dead) Library & PO right by your pad on 85th & Park Ln So.
Id say if you just need a place to crash, and are not looking to raise a family, and dont mind noise / over crowding/shotty sanitation, can cook for yourself because your only options are greasy spanish & chinese food - you'll be ok.(that said, PLEASE try Thai Kitchen on 86th & Jamaica - if they are still there you wont be sorry)
The 102 prescient has a good track record - you can check their crime stats easily.
Jamaica Avenue is also serviced by the Q56, and will take you all the way to the end of Jamaica Ave on 192 St. where the DMV is.
I have a new family and the amenities were severely lacking for someone in my position. It is a neighborhood in transition. I moved to a stable neighborhood in the Bronx and have never looked back.
Good luck to you.

The part about not wanting to transfer trains or get off at Broadway Junction.
Considering how many cops are in that station at all hours because of the transit police station right there, I never had an issue transferring trains or waiting for the bus outside. And this was from '75 to '98 when crime was a lot worse.
Now if you're talking getting out of the station and wandering the area, then yes I would absolutely advise against it.

After school hours in the mid 90s the station was pretty bad.
