If you are going today or tomorrow the cab would be better since buses will be running off-peak and there is minimal traffic in the city. If it is during the week you're probably better of taking the E from 51st/Lex to 50th/8ave and walking.

I wanted to mention that if it's more than one of you taking this walk/cab or whatever, that it probably makes more sense just to get in a cab instead of each paying the $2 on your metrocard to get the subway or bus. (of course maybe you would have already purchased the unlimited metro card for the week or the day). And walking is free, but it is a long walk in what will probably be cold weather.

Go to Hopstop.com -- in addition to subway/bus directions, there's also a feature called "Taxi Cost/time" which should give you a pretty good idea of the cost to ride.

Enjoy the show!

No, don't take the 50th St. The 57th St. buses (and make sure you take M57, not the M58 which turns up to 72nd & Bwy) may be slow, but at least they move. You'll wait forever for the 50th St. crosstown, and once it gets to your stop, it doesn't budge. Point to point, it's much closer, but it'll take a lot longer, unless you're traveling after 8:00 pm.
