Just watched two next-door neighbors taken out of their apts separately, handcuffed and put into wagons.
I have no idea why.

My question is: when this happens, how does the city handle their dogs? They keep two pitbulls outside only, fenced into their backyard next to mine. Sometimes the dogs escape; in fact I saw one earlier walking around without leash, which was very unusual.

I don't hear any barking right now -- also unusual.

Am I in for a quiet night?

How many Asian neighbors do you have? Cops usually get a small kickback if they tell of strays or unattended pooches. Usually dog commands a higher price at Asian markets then cat. I would only worry if you hear the pits cry out then sudden silence. Ballpean hammers are popular for this purpose. I'm sure you have nothing to worry about, carry on.

Usually the cops shoot the dogs before the arrest.

Depends on how much info the perps give. The dogs are typically tortured in front of their owners until they give up local drug dealers, or say a few illegally possessed guns.

Maybe your criminal neighbors had the foresight to do some advance planning by reading something like this: Planning for your pets in case of arrest

Um, no. They're in the yard, barking. Maybe raising bail.

IIRC if the person makes NYPD aware of pets/animals the situation is much like with children; that is if the caretaker is going to jail then the animals will be put into care (ASPCA/animal control summoned).

Would have to research further but *think* this policy grew out of a situation where someone was taken into custody and their animals left to fend for themselves alone with perhaps death or something.

A friend lives in a building where a prostitute (indoor prostitution) was being arrested. She was going on about "what will happen to my dog.." (small Bichon), when a neighbor offered to take care of it until the situation played itself out.
