Women here in NYC smile at guys if they find them attractive or hot, or they just want to upfront them on something like a sales pitch from Mary Kay, or waitressing

Here's a primer for anyone who feels embittered because they think not enough women are smiling or paying attention to them in the streets of New York.

I smile at babies, cute kids, adorable pets, or when someone or something amuses me. That's about it.

Don't take it personally.
And that last bit ^^^ goes for the OP, too

There is nothing wrong with being courteous, and a lite smile is not mean any thing other then the recognition of humanity ,not a predator waiting to bite your head off.
I sit in a coffee shop and watch people all the time and it is easy to see those that have issues going on and it really doesn't help them to interrupt their train of though ,if it particularly serious.
I smile and leave it at that ,if some one smiles back that's fine, it is not a come on to force a conversation . But that's the way it is here in southern California.
Years ago I spent some time back east and people look at you weird if you smile at them, like he must be an idiot, or has a con game going on.
People don't take you seriously if you smile, there.
I never felt so out of place .

If you can't get someone to smile without asking them to you're doing it wrong. Funny how I can get women to smile at me all the time without saying a word.

Yeah OK Romeo. Anyways back to reality, ladies if man asks you or tells you to smile you spray them in the face with mace or pepper spray. That ought to teach from from talking to you. And don't forget to kick them in the nuts when then they are on the ground writhting in pain.

It's all about the culture's deeply ingrained attitudes about gender constructions: the whole "What are little girls made of? Sugar, spice, and everything nice" narrative that posits that women are supposed to always be pleasant, accommodating, and sweet, especially toward males. It's a microagression that most people dismiss as silly, although it has deep implications.

Someone's bitter. Plenty of women don't bother smiling at all and I'm okay with that, but it's not a hard thing to do if you have a personality above a garden snail.

IIRC the French among others think Americans are "loopy" for smiling all the time.
