Apartments in Midtown West
Midtown West is a realtors way of saying Hell's Kitchen correct? Is most of Hell's Kitchen okay to live in? What's crime like around there. Is it a death sentence so to speak if you get a apartment there? I'm looking online and in person and I've seen some nice looking studios in that area I just wanted to know if that area is okay. I'm talking like W.51st and W. 44th around that area. Thanks for your help.

No, it's not a death sentence. Crime is not bad either. Just use common sense-like anywhere else. That area though, especially 40's and 50's by 5th, 6th and 7th avenue, is not extremely residential. There are many business down there. But I've known friends that have lived over there and it's fine.
Good luck!

Hell's Kitchen is very nice. I would not hesitate to live there for a moment. Especially the area you laid out between 44th and 51st is very lively with lots of bars and restaurants along 9th avenue. There are luxury developements going up all over the area and rents are getting just as bad as many other parts of Manhattan. I feel safe walking around the area at all hours due to the foot traffic that the bars and restaurants generate. 9th and 10th aves are fine and 11th is on it's way. It's a very nice and desireable neighborhood and if you find a decent deal there you should jump on it. I looked there and couldn't find anything that met my requirements. Good luck!
Oh, one more thing, try Pam's Real Thai on 49th and 9th. It's the best Thai in Manhattan in my opinion (NY Times, Chowhound, etc. also seem to agree).

Certainly not a death sentence.
Midtown West is realtor speak for Hell's Kitchen, generally 8th Ave to the Hudson River, as opposed to the business or tourist area between 5th and 8th. I thought about this area, and it does have a lot restaurants and bars, etc., and great subway access and access to Central Park. My reason for turning elsewhere was that it's gotten very expensive (used to be a better deal relative to other parts of Manhattan), and I found 8th and 9th Aves to have too many people about and too much noise, and 10th and 11th don't have enough people. Sidewalks are much more crowded, it seemed to me, than other residential parts of Manhattan.

Sounds good. Thanks. I like that area a lot from what I saw I just didn't know if it was safe. Now I do.
