Forrest Houses are rough!

IMO, one of the worst projects in the city.

Nah, it's not as bad as those on Webster and 3rd around 168th.

West Village. I can only afford to live here because I moved here before the rent laws changed. That said, with the uptick in stabilized rent every year, it's getting too expensive.

But I love the neighborhood. A friend of mine once called it "the Sesame Street" neighborhood because of its cheeriness. Getting anywhere, including Jersey City and Hoboken, is easy and convenient.

I don't know how anyone can afford to move into this neighborhood now, though.

I try to remember to regularly thank Jane Jarvis for saving the neighborhood from Robert Moses and his highway mania.

UES (mid 80s)

Pros:
- 24 hour grocery store, Duane Reade, diners
- A few minute walk to the subway, a few minute walk to Carl Schurz Park on the river, or Central Park
- Dog runs in the parks
- Very fast (IMO) to get downtown on the 4/5 when it's not rush hour
- Always tons of trains, even if they do sometimes go slowly
- Anything you need is around somewhere, be it pet stores, electronics, cell phone companies, clothes, gyms, etc.
- A good variety of housing options - walk ups, elevator buildings, full service doorman buildings, etc.
- Very safe, even at 3am
- Near museums, if you're into that
- So many options for take-out its not even funny (except quality is an issue!)
- Seems to be good for families
- A lot of fratty bars, if you're into that, and it's a con if you're not
- On holidays, it gets really quiet here because everyone leaves!

Cons:
- Restaurants are really expensive, and there aren't many hole-in-the-wall, great eats
- If you can't afford to take a taxi everywhere (which is most people), it's very demoralizing to always see people hopping out of taxis and towncars in front of their doorman buildings.
- Doormen who obnoxiously whistle so freaking loudly to get a taxi
- Not as many small businesses as other neighborhoods. Lots of big box stores around here.
- Noisy. My apartment faces the back and lately I've been woken up by sirens every morning.
- Rent is so high, and landlords know that if you don't like it, there are 1,000 people waiting for your apartment, therefore they can harass you and treat you like crap because they know you'll take it just to keep living here
- You never want to go anywhere that's not on the 4-5-6 because it takes too long
- Not a great sense of community
- Almost getting run over by delivery guys on bikes all the time
- Owning a car would be awful, especially since garages are $400+/mo
- Standing butt to butt with people on the subway during rush hour, or even sometimes not during rush hour
- Constant construction and scaffolding

I could think of so many more for either side!! This is fun.

Let's put Roll Call back on the map. It's really helpful.
Anyone have firsthand experience living in West Village?

I've lived in the West Village since 1991.

Pros:
- Duane Reade, diners, and dives
- Many nice tree lined streets
- Idiosyncratic street plan creates a unique feel
- Rehabbed parks by the water
- Major Trauma Center right in the area (St Vincents Hospital)
- Nearby to the Meatpacking district and Apple Store
- Close to many subway lines
- Anything you need is around somewhere, be it pet stores, electronics, cell phone companies, clothes, gyms, bagels, etc.
- Generally safe
- Good for families, but recent crowding at PS 41 has led to waiting lists
- On holidays, it gets really quiet here because everyone leaves!

Cons:
- Women on Cell phones (men don't win any awards either in that department)
- Not as gay as it used to be
- Quite expensive for everything (housing, groceries)
- More crowded than in years past.
- PLENTY of restaurants, including a number open 24 hours
- Can be noisy depending on where you live.
- Owning a car would be awful, especially since garages are $400+/mo
- Constant construction and scaffolding

Cons: Food options are mostly limited to traditional ghetto food, soul food, Spanish, and African. Dead at night. Everything closes early (except the Pathmark). Very few bars or sit-down restaurants (nightlife is restricted to a couple jazz clubs). Not even a single 24-hour diner up here.
Some of these transplants should stay where they come from. Mod cut:languageis ghetto food?
