Really? The one time I was in New York I stayed in Woodside and loved it, however, I did freely walk about Woodside late at night. I encountered no problem but perhaps I was being naive. Are there areas of Woodside that are less safe than others?

Stick-ups? Really? I used to hang out in Woodside a lot at night time.. and there were mostly teenagers walking around, but not the dangerous kind.

Canarsie.
Pros: By the water. Decent rent rates. Lots of yards and single family homes. Not as crowded as the rest of brooklyn. You can find parking here.
Cons: Neighborhood has gotten alot rougher since I was a kid in the 70s. Occasional shootings. Not the most dangerous place in Brooklyn but definitely not the safest either.

Almost forgot other pros about Canarsie, no hipsters yuppies or other gentrificators. Just middle and working class families.
Con about Canarsie alot farther from the city then other Brooklyn neighborhoods.

Used to live in Billyburg around Bedford next to the L (blegh, I know--young and foolish thing to do), then Bed-Stuy around Nostrand and Gates, now Washington Heights in the W180s.
Washington Heights (mostly the upper, westernish portions)
Pros:
- Wonderfully cheap rent
- Good assorted dining options with Hispanic (mostly Dominican, but some Mexican, El Salvadorian, Ecuadorian) restaurants and food stands along St. Nick's, a few kosher options near Yeshiva, rows of "gentrified" restaurants down W 181, 187, and near the Presbyterian including various ethnic cuisines and semi-upscale dining.
- Good grocery shopping including various supermarkets, smaller grocers, occasional great deals on the streetside produce stands, butchers, fish markets, and small semi-specialty shops shilling Asian and Russian treats
- Good mix of all of stores/services within a fifteen minute walk (hardware stores, banks, movie theater, pharmacy, florists, library, post office, wine store etc.)
- Includes some great parks: Fort Tryon Park, Fort Washington Park, Highbridge Park
- Features the GW bridge, which gets my vote for one of the most beautiful structures in NYC. Convenient when coming back from a shoot in Jersey, provides a good place to walk, and rewards the walk with delicious Korean food in Fort Lee
- The Cloisters, one of my favorite museums in NYC
- Audobon Terrace (also home to a great small museum) and Morris-Jumel Mansion in the lower stretches of the heights are great, too
- Proximity to Columbia (and to a lesser extent, City College) for events; Yeshiva is in the nabe, but doesn't do so much event-ing
Cons:
- Litter with a side of dog Moderator cut: language (sometimes I go OCD crazy and walk around picking up litter and throwing it away)
- Sometimes a bit loud, sometimes a bit sketchy (nothing on my place in Bed-Stuy though)
- Getting to the midtown, downtown, and waterfront brooklyn for events and meeting people is a long commute
- Added to that, few people willing to make the visit
- Added to that, the A train craps down a lot
- Nightlife looks lively, but seems hard for a non-local to get in on
- A lot of the architecture/buildings are pretty bland though some of it is due to the adornments and ornaments being taken out
All in all, I like it.

Astoria, Queens
Pros: convenient you don't need a car. Everything you need is a few blocks away, shops (a supermarket every few blocks, retail stores etc), subway etc; Lots of rent stabilized apts here; fun area especially if you're young.
Cons: noisy, can't afford to buy a house or condo here unless you have a lot of money. Last time I looked a studio could cost 800,000 maybe the prices have dipped some. Most of the buildings are going up in Long Island City and those are very expensive.

South Forest Hills (Metropolitan at Woodhaven Blvd)
Pros -
Quiet
Great bus access (Q54 to Williamsburg literally in front of my door, Q11/21/53 1 block away, 23 from Forest Hills train station drops me off at 54 stop)
Bus Access to three trains (M, J, Forest Hills trains)
Get to brag about how the US open started in your neighborhood
Nice People
Rent is reasonable (1 bedrm converted into 2, I pay 700)
Trader Joes, Staples, Home Depot, Panera Bread right around corner
Cons-
TOO quiet
too far from subway, closest is 1 mile
Q54 stops in front of my building, and wakes me up at 4am
everything closes early, except for one bar and the 7-11
no real diversity
I am going to move to Jackson Heights, I want the 24/7 New York

LOL if you want the 24/7 NYC im not so sure this is the right place... although if you're near roosevelt ave you'll see hundreds of people going to bars and clubs at night... and also a good amount of people getting arrested for fighting and disorderly conduct

Coney Island
Pros: Beach right behind my building
Can go jog, walk or bike on the boardwalk in nice enough weather
Cons: No good places for food nearby
No public transportation close by. You have to take a $2.00 cab to the subway or the bus to the subway
No one wants to live here but everyone wants the parking here when they need to go to the beach and amusement parks
Crime, Drugs, Gangs
Time to get the HECK out of here!!!!! SERIOUSLY
