My old neighborhood Bushwick
Pros: Closer to Downtown Brooklyn and Manhattan than Canarsie.
Cons: Worthless neighbors who thought the steps to my door were the neighborhood dumpster. Also idiots who would stay outside drinking and blasting music all night. I love hip hop as much as the next guy. But at 3 am I hate all types of music. I use to leave for work at 5 am and those idiots would just be leaving to go to sleep. Must be nice to be unemployed.
Thats the reason I moved to Canarsie.

Hmmm....might have answered this long ago, but my views have changed a bit in the two years I've lived here.
Moved from Manhattan to the northwest Bronx 2 years ago. After some very scarifying experiences (lol) mostly due to my own actions, I have to say:
Pros: Very close to Manhattan, two subway lines, express bus, multiple bus lines.
Close to Botanical Gardens, Zoo, and Little Italy.
Great parks which have all been renovated, and they get used for what they are intended for: families, kids, etc.
A real old time NYC flavor; lots of new immigrants who own mom and pops, so you get to know them if you frequent them. I like to do so not only because the shopping on Fordham Road is insanely cheap, but it's really nice to get to know your local store owners in general. Even the local Rite Aid has gotten way better and the employees will say hi when they see you.
Lots of "diversity"....know that's a hackneyed term. As a white girl, I'm a real minority, and I have encountered some reverse racism and harassment, but it was almost like an initiation. I thought I was a big tough native NYer, and I still am...my big Jew girl mouth is enough to make grown men run in horror when I choose to unleash it with one of my tirades...lol...
Cons:
If you're white you are still gonna feel like an oddity. Some of the Dominican storeowners especially may give you a bit of a hard time. Really burns my butt since it's illegal to discriminate and if they're illegal immigrants it makes it even more infuriating that they only find it amusing rather than scary when I get angry and tell them off.
Some serious crime (as in murders) in the area, despite a very strong police presence. Even living in a gated community as I do is no ironclad guarantee you will be safe (and certainly not after you exit the gates; should be a sign saying "you are now entering 'da hool')...
Not much nightlife (though there's more if you're Dominican). For example, there's a restaurant down the street which has very little business during the week (though the food is good) but on weekend nights they have music/dancing (and a big doorman/bouncer who checks for weapons etc before you can enter). But the area is convenient to Manhattan as well as Riverdale, which has a lot more dining and nightlife options.
Sorry....haven't been on the boards for over a year so I'm a little finger happy...lol...

From what neighborhood of NYC are you from?
This is going to be fun.
