Rats like mice don't like being out in the open for long periods, too much risk from predators. What cannot be eaten in safety is either dragged to some place suitable or often just left.

I thought of this guy last night while waiting for the Northbound 6 train at 59th. There was a small rat foraging in a swamp of SLOP on the tracks picking up tiny bits of detritus.
How he would have loved a slice.
