It's a disgrace the options a world class city has to get to / from airport. I fly twice a month to / from miami on a Friday / Monday from the financial district - I just hop in a cab to la guardia. It's not worth taking two trains to Newark or whatever awful subway options to JFK.

I think to Newark you must take 3 trains - PATH, NJ Transit, Airtrain, to JFK 2 trains - A or LIRR, then Airtrain.

Take 3 different trains is a little too much, taking 2 to get to JFK is okay. The ride on the A train is long but that's due to the distance between JFK and Manhattan, not much can be done about that. Real disgrace is LGA which is not even serviced by trains.

JFK seems to have cheaper flights so I'm leaning that way. Also prefers to take just 2 trains rides rather than 3. I'm okay with sitting on the A for an hour, time can be spent reading a book or watching a movie. Switching trains is a real hassle though.

Basic Uber car service from financial district to LaGuardia is $52 plus tip.

During the times you'd be on the A train, it runs express through Brooklyn. Even the J train runs skip stop at these times. You won't be using the LIRR from downtown. Just either the A or the J to the AirTrain.
