Look at Orthodox Jews who by the way are often poor (they make a up a large portion of families receiving welfare/food stamps and in some parts of NYC dominate public housing), but don't have a dog in this fight. Why? Because they largely send their kids to Yeshivas but the kicker is often on a NYC taxpayer dime. That or the public schools in their areas are so dominated by those sects they pretty much have become defacto Yeshivas.
Most Orthodox Jews send their kids to yeshivot, but the yeshivot are not paid for by NYC (or any other) taxpayers.
In addition, there is no public school that is so dominated by Orthodox Jews that it has become a defacto yeshiva.
(Which area's public schools are you thinking of when you refer to that?)

Reason: grammar

May have had it backwards, these are the things one was thinking of:

Are you sure about that? They do get state funds and a lot of them for things like "special ed" and busing.
They fraud the hell out of the state but that's their payoff for being a solid voting bloc.

If we want to start grouping them then don't they as a group pay a disportionate share of income taxes. Despite the extra "benefits" that they receive, they probably still pay more taxes compared to every other group.
NYC having segregated schools actually supports the notion that the city's neighborhoods are segregated.
Charters are just another form of zoned public schools.
There are segregated parts of NYC, but there are A LOT of diverse neighborhoods. If NYC is segregated, then so is any other major city in the US. And it's not necessarily true that segregated schools would support that notion, since the public school system works differently in NYC than in most places (in regards to zoning).
I think people are more comfortable with their own ethnic groups. That's been happening since the first Irishman or Italian came through Ellis Island. Then you have economic powers at play. Multi millionaires on Park Ave are not going to interact or travel in the same circles as a middle class guy in Morris Park.
BTW Westchester County prevailed in the court of appeals that they are NOT racist. Money dictates where people reside.

Bingo. And today no one is prohibited from living anywhere. I've recently met welfare whites who live in East New York, and Hispanics or Blacks who live in Chelsea.
True segregation is the state sanctioned segregation of the South where all people of a race where prohibited from being at a place or attending certain schools or having jobs because of their race.
That is not the case with contemporary NY at all. I feel the term segregation is abused. Of course discrimination occurs but this is NOTHING like the pre civil rights era (even the pre civil rights era in NYC).
