Obviously anyone who has been around NY for a little while and made a point to get off the beaten path knows that NYC is not Manhattan and the regular folks who make under six figures do not live there. Manhattan is populated by out-of-towners who, in may cases, feel the need to cling to the very fringes of Manhattan just to be on the island and be able to write "New York, NY." on their envelopes. The hipster set now feels the same way about some areas of Brooklyn.

Hey, I would love to live in Manhattan if I could AFFORD to (afford is different than just being able to pay the rent as many people don't seem to grasp) and maybe someday I will be able to.
Yours is a great post too. This is what I meant in saying it's too easy for people to have an image of "Brooklyn" or an image of "Queens." If Astoria, LIC, Greenpoint, and Williamsburg were not in different boros, I bet people would think they had more in common with each other than Astoria does with Bayside and Williamsburg does with Bay Ridge.

Having lived in Manhattan for over 6 years, I actually wouldn't want to live there anymore. I miss the convenience of having all the Manhattan things right outside the door and not having to get back to somewhere else if I meet people out in the city, but there's too much noise and not enough sunlight for me. Even if I could afford it without blinking, I just wouldn't pay that much for so little space with no outdoor space at all. I've had too many nice cookouts in friend's small yards in the Boston area in the last few years to really want to go back to living in Manhattan.

Isn't it good enough that Run DMC and 50 Cent come out of Queens?

this is exactly why i dont condone moving to certain areas of the city when asked about on this board. i usually advise to go there for yourself and see if you'll feel comfortable. there's even some parts of clinton hill that have gang/drug violence (quincy and downing).

What, no Jay Z song about Bay Ridge or Sheepshead Bay? No respect whatsoever.

I'm from brooklyn, born and raised. Its amazing how many yuppies are walking around some neighborhoods that just 5 years ago they would not be caught dead in. (or maybe they would be caught dead literally) Ive noticed that since i lived out of NYC, (i live in south florida at the moment) people are STILL on NY's Jock... if you know what i mean. I truly think that people do move there not knowing a damn thing about the neighborhood, pay an arm and a leg for a shoebox, just to say they live in Brooklyn. Really sad if you ask me, but im happy im not the one paying more than 1500 a month to live in the slums. People FROM brooklyn are smarter than that, but unfortunately the people making the blind moves into bad neighborhoods have paid, and will continue to pay the ultimate price. This may not happen by the hundreds like it used to in the late 80's early 90's, but it still exists. I know when i move back, which is going to be next month (thank god), it will not be to the hood. Ive been there and done that, and while some may think its cool... id rather be the one alive with a decent amount of money left to spend on whatever i want. By the way i lived in Flatbush, Crown Heights, and midwood(which isnt the hood). So i DO know better.. and im not denouncing being from the hood because it made me the man i am today, and i love my old neighborhoods for that, but for the new ones coming in who do not NEED to live there... think twice. i think i better stop now because i can go on all day about this, so im gonna call it a wrap

What I don't understand is why people get upset when strangers pay too much rent. Let all the hipsters congregate in a few overpriced hoods; it's easier to avoid running into them that way.

Yeah my buddy who moved to Bklyn, his partner was stuck up only a month after being there. They got the hint and got the heck out of dodge.

I currently live in Maine right now and everyone from the town I live in now who moved to NYC are all in Brooklyn. I guess moving to Brooklyn is the "cool" thing to do among 20-somethings. But I can't blame them to much because at least in Brooklyn you can at least find rent that is reasonable.

Did you even read the OP? From your response it doesn't sound like it. Or maybe you are not aware that NYC has 4 other boroughs besides Brooklyn and only one is Manhattan?

And that of the boroughs that are not Manhattan, that Brooklyn probably has the highest rents of all of them?
