I'm planning to move to the city in March after I return from a contract at another theatre. I have a few friends, theatre and non-theatre, who live in the city but thought I would ask you guys as well. Is there a more concentrated part of the city where you find theatre-folk/creative types, or are they pretty much dispersed throughout the whole city?
I have heard talk of Washington Heights and Astoria.
I'm hoping to go with a budget of $600-850 for a room.
I've heard there are a lot of actors in Astoria as well. I think it's a good choice for them because auditions tend to be in Midtown and it's very fast and easy to get to Midtown from there.
I think you will find rooms in Astoria more like $850 to $1000 per month, maybe even higher. I highly doubt you will find something for under $700 but I guess you never know. Check craigslist to get a sense of prices, but don't believe everything you see on there because some percentage are scams or bait and switch.
Parts of Astoria aren't very close to a subway station, requiring a 15 minute walk or short bus ride to the subway. Those apartments cost a little less. If you offer to take the smallest or least of 3 bedrooms in an apartment, that sometimes helps with price.
If you can't find what you can afford in Astoria, understand that actors live all over this city and just go where they need to go. Good subway lines into Manhattan, and a flexible dayjob work schedule are more important than choice of neighborhood residence.
A lot of independent companies perform on the Lower East Side now, and sometimes in boroughs. The black-box off-off-Broadway independent theaters need to find reasonable rents to practice and perform, so aren't only in Midtown Theater District. Really, you'll be all over the city by train if you want to try your skills at acting here.
