Fieldston is one of the most expensive parts of the whole city.

Oh boy.... on craigslist they had some apartment that we're around $630- $880. Could it be because it's in a bad area, or could the ads be a scam? The pictures and ad I saw look pretty legit to me so I don't know....

Default Fieldston is not a dangerous area

Fieldston is a very nice area. The problem for some people is that it's a bit removed from mass transit. If you live there, you'll need to take at least one bus to get to the subway.

Other people like that aspect. There are fewer apartments in that area -- the housing stock tends to be more single and two family homes rather than apartments.

So if you've found a reasonable apartment, go see it, ask some questions about how you'd get around (do you have a car? Is there parking with this apartment or are you going to be looking for street parking?).

Also, because much of the neighborhood is planned with the idea that you'll have a car, the shopping is concentrated in a few areas, and there are larger sections that have no stores, in comparison to sections of Brooklyn or the Bronx, where stores are sprinkled more thickly through the residential areas. If you don't have a car, how will you do shopping, laundry, etc.?

I'd hate to discourage the OP, but those Craigslist ads are most likely not true. Fieldston is a very expensive, nice area. I would still look into it though, you never know, and you don't lose anything by doing a little foot work. But I wouldn't get my hopes up about apts in Fieldstone listed for $630-$880. The only way I see this being true is if it's a super-small studio. Like 300 sq ft or something...
