But will these newcomers look to come to NYC? In the past many folks-- even many Asians who are otherwise heavily clustered on the West Coast -- made NYC their first stop before moving up the economic ladder and going on to the suburbs or other parts of the country. But the economic ladder is missing a few rungs these days.
Will future immigrants increasingly skip NYC for better jobs and cheaper housing in the Midwest and Sunbelt, with the only ones coming to New York City the ones with money or high levels of education? Are we still a place immigrants get their foothold in the US, or have we priced them out, along with with so many native-born New Yorkers?
