This is a long shot but I'm not sure where to start. I have a brand-new, used once, high quality German dictionary and a few other German-language-learning books. I'd like to donate them somewhere, but where?? A needy charter school that teaches German? Does anyone have any ideas?

That was a great idea, and I emailed 3 schools, but no response. Man, I can't give these suckers away.

The Goethe Institute has a library. Maybe they would take them or know who would. https://www.goethe.de/ins/us/en/sta/...?wt_sc=newyork

I'd say put it on eBay but there is quite a lot there already: german dictionary | eBay

If worse comes to worse, I've been there, couldn't give something away, it feels bad to throw the thing away but I got over it

I live not too far from that German American School in Ridgewood. It's been there for years but I never see anyone enter or leave that facility. I don't think it's active anymore. When I saw the OP, that was the first place I thought of as well though.

According to the info, they only offer classes for under 2 hours two days a week. So I guess it's possible you are just not passing by on the days/hours they have classes. But I really don't know since all I know of them is from online info.

Default Housing Works Bookstore

Donate them to the Housing Works Bookstore/Cafe.

You can get a tax write off for the value of the books (you set the value). You can deduct that value as a charitable donation on your taxes.

They'll sell the books, and the money they get will support their many programs for people with HIV.

Someone who wants the books will be thrilled to get them, and will use them.
