This is a good idea. There's a lot of art on Etsy that you won't find anywhere else. Wrap it in an MTA map.

Food.

Maybe something local from the Union Square greenmarket. Or Jacques Torres chocolate. I used to bring a friend bagels.

I'd go right to the gift shop of the NY Tenement Museum.

Home page

Click on categories of interest (office, kitchen, etc). Items are reasonably priced, practical, and include many with NYC decoration on them.

Other museum stores, such as MOMA or the Metropolitan, have art posters and elegant gifts. You can send a poster rolled up in a mailer, but they'll have to frame it wherever they are. Also try the gift shops of the Bronx or Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. They have mugs that represent some of their special exhibitions.

From Brooklyn, "Juniors Restaurant" mails cheesecakes everywhere. For food, my go-to's would be rugelach from Gumbo's bakery in Crown Heights, or pastrami. Rugelach would hold up in a mailed box DIY, but pastrami would need special care so it doesn't spoil on the way. I don't know who does that. Representing gentrification: Crowd these items in the same package with some hipster jar of beard oil or hyper-priced artisan mayonnaise made here.

If you're in Manhattan, go to Zabar's. They ship food everywhere. A salami will never decay along the way.
