You can pay it forward by checking for your friends and relatives as well. But just be sure before you check that these people are really good friends of yours. Otherwise, if you do find money for people you check, it puts you in the awkward position of approaching friends who are more like acquaintances and trying to explain why you thought to put their name into this website.

It's good that New York State provides this clearinghouse, but I question how people's money ends up here in the first place. For instance, I had a joint account with a relative at a local bank. After she passed away, the bank closed the account, and some time later, my name showed up on New York State's website for unclaimed funds. But if the bank had made the slightest effort to contact me, that would have saved us all a lot of trouble. I've been at the same address for more than 20 years with the same phone number. I'm really easy to reach! I think it's so odd how this works.

Got $70 owing to my deceased father.

On another State's website I got $130 from a job I once had and apparently they owed me money that I had forgotten about (I probably neglected to pick up my final check).

So if you have lived in another State, check that State's website, too. Also agree, go through the State's official website, not a 3rd-party site unless the official site directs you to do so. Some States farm out fulfillment through a 3rd-party site.
