Thank you for posting this question. I could have written it myself, but with a couple of relevant twists, I'm moving from Panama, in Central America, with my wife and 4 year old son...You can figure how exiting, yet fear of the unknown filled experience this would be...Base salary of 150K, plus rellocation expenses and a yearly bonus (up to 75%) based on performance...I don't really know much about living in NY, as I've only visited for a couple of days before...Since this was posted back in 2008, what has been your experience like? Is it all you expected?

Just out of curiosity, what line of work are you in?
I work for a growing company that has an opening in NYC. They are willing to pay my relocation expenses and my total comp would be around 150k. My question is: As a single 30 year old, how well could I live in NYC off of that? Could I actually live in Manhattan or would I have to live outside and commute? The one thing that scares me is not being able to live the lifestyle I currently have making 90k in Raleigh, NC.
Other deductions to be considered: medical insurance premium and 401k contribution. Unless these are fully funded by the company, it could easily reduce your disposable income by $1000/month (or $12k/year). In addition, $3000/mth is pretty tight for accommodation in Manhattan for a family of 3. A 2-bedroom costs at least $4k/mth in a decent neighborhood in Manhattan.
